WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sandra Day O'Connor noticed a disturbing development as her last day on the Supreme Court neared. Over her final years on the bench, more people were talking about "activist judges," an issue she said that appeared to be "erupting all over the country."
"That seemed to be a mantra of some kind," she told CNN.
Members of the Supreme Court are a notoriously press-shy, but O'Connor, who retired in January, and Justice Stephen Breyer, a 13-year veteran, recently spoke candidly to CNN about their concerns about judicial independence and political retribution against judges. "I saw increasing indicators of unhappiness with judges," O'Connor told CNN's Jeffrey Toobin as part of the network's "Broken Government" series. "We heard all kinds of statements by members of Congress, by state legislators. We saw legislation introduced to somehow restrict or affect judges at both the state and federal levels."
O'Connor's bluntness was tempered somewhat by Breyer's thoughtfulness

Truth hurts hmm Ms Sell out?
Don't be activist and you won't be called that. Easy fix.
Loosen up, Sandy baby. You're too tight.
Actually it is being replaced with "black robed tyrants" to keep up with current rulings.
So tell us about the latest judicially-forced same-sex "union" legislation out of the New Jersey Supreme Court, former Justice O'Connor? What do you call that? I call it "judicial activism."
It still stuns me that most of the Supreme's are picked by Republican Presidents. I guess that they have some of the blame.
Sandy Baby, the highlight of your life was a drunken John Riggins calling you Sandy baby. It was all downhill since then.
Hey, is Sandra doesn't like "judicial activism" she can call it any darn thing she likes. Its still an abuse of power.
I think that "someone" is supposed to be the people
nannie nannie nannie goat....free speech baby
If the old bag wasn't a LIEberal activist, she'd have RETIRED already.
God bless Ronald Reagan for all of his great deeds, but when it came to SCOTUS appointments, he had a 67% failure rate (O'Connor & Tony Kennedy).
It's LONG PAST DUE to challenge these BLACK ROBED TERRORIST LAWYERS for thier attacks on American values and traditions.
Only SATAN could call the millions upon millions of innocent, helpless, and defenseless humans a "choice." Onlly an insane black robed lawyer could decide to DEFY the very government OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, and FOR THE PEOPLE by mandating that we must accept perversity and homosexuality AGAINST THE WISHES OF THE PEOPLE!
Truly, O'Connor is a black robed lawyer terrorist and should have never been on the bench to begin with!
Calling her an old bag is a bit much. She at least retired when President Bush had a chance to replace her, not hanging on until the bitter end like Stevens.
I'm just thankful the wicked witch had to leave her post.
What she says and thinks is no longer important to the judicial
nor to myself.
She actually said "I saw increasing indicators of unhappiness..."?
LOL. The woman sounds as shrill as Algore or Billary. Who the hell talks like that?
Perhaps the indicators of unhappiness would decrease if she would shut the hell up.
