Who is to say that these guys weren't the downsized descendants of dinosaurs. Current thinking is that is exactly what they, like all birds, are.
Mammals were around when the dinosaurs were, but not birds.
Although current thinking is also that all the large dinosaurs died out when the big rock hit down in the Yucatan, so I guess birds evolved from the smaller ones.
