... and without pine tar, too.
That pic makes me SMILE!! :-)
My kids get freaked OUT when we're watching a game from another stadium and the fans boo -- especially when they boo their own team.
Glad you enjoyed the game here ~ I figure I'm a little biased, but I love our town.
The Tigers may have needed to lose this series to win one down the road. The Cardinals' experience in the postseason really showed and the Tigers were way uptight. That's a great collection of talent, though, and if the organization can keep it together, we'll hear from them again, you can count on it.
Huh?? If it wasn't illegal, why'd he wash his hand. Oh yeah, I forgot. The ump was just talking to him about the last time he was in the WS. Yeah...riiiiiight. Whatever.
Seriously, go back and read Jim Bouton's "Ball Four" for a detailed description of all the ways Whitey Ford used to doctor the baseball.
Against the rules? Sure. So is taking out the runner at second base, but it's all part of the game. Occasionally somebody will get caught and be made an example of just to keep things honest, and La Russa beefed a bit because it was the World Series and the spotlight was so intense and the importance of the games so magnified, but it goes on all the time and will continue to go on. At least it's not pharmaceutical cheating, that's where I draw the line.
I think the Brewers were actually up 3-2 needing to win just one of two in St. Louis and got clobbered in both games. I have different reasons for gnashing my teeth about that year, I was a Braves fan and that's who the Cardinals played in the NLCS, and the first game got rained out with Niekro leading and screwed up our pitching and we got beat three straight. If it hadn't rained and we could've split in St. Louis, I think we'd have had a chance because the Cardinals' starters, especially Forsch, never pitched well in the old Atlanta Stadium. Whitey Herzog talks about it in his first book, he said in the record book it looks like the Cardinals mashed the Braves, but that they got some breaks in that series, it was really closer than it looked and he was petrified of it going to a fourth or fifth game because of Forsch who probably would've pitched game 4 and another starter whose name escapes me this early in the a.m., I can't believe that's 24 years ago, who would've pitched game 5 having not had much success in "The Launching Pad."
Even before they won the series you should be proud of your Cards.
I was fortunate to stay at a downtown hotel a block away and walked to the game. I got there about two hours early and walked around old Busch stadium and watched some warm up practice. After the game I walked with my family around the arch and also around the dome capital.
The only thing I didn't like were the many vagrants in the area.
Arch was much more impressive then any photos I'd seen of it. I'd also driven by a couple of times but up close it is magnificaent.
Thanks St. Louis, I look forward to again someday coming to another Cards game.
Forsch is to me one of the all time great Cardinal pitchers. There where many. Do you know he came up in the Majors as a 3rd baseman? Never pitched before. That is why his batting average was so high.
The story was that the pitching coach saw how hard he threw out runners at 1st base and asked him if he ever thought about pitching. The rest was history. The only Cardinal to toss two no hitters, and hit two grand slams. He hit one of them 1982. His batting average that year was 450.
Conservatives: The press hates them. Libs despise them irrationally. Comedians lampoon George Dubya. People say that conservatives are too wealthy and that's the only reason why they are successful.
Yankees: The press hates them. Fans of opposing despise them irrationally. Comedians lampoon George Steinbrenner. People say that the Yankees are too wealthy and that's the only reason why they are successful.
Yankee fans respect winners. Funny how my team will never be given anything but hate....and that's the way I like it. I see it as a price for success because I'm hated for the successes of conservatism as well.
Kudos to all winners, for such is the game of life.
