Former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov expressed conviction that peace in the middle East cannot be established without Syria, calling for ending the occupation of the Syrian Golan to achieves this peace.
In a lecture he delivered Sunday evening at al-Assad Public Library in Damascus on the occasion of the publication of his new book "The Middle East: The Known and Hidden", Mr. Primakov said it is necessary that peace should be comprehensive and Israel has to accept to return the occupied Syrian Golan. However, he asserted, Israel was not ready for such peace.
Mr. Primakov added that Russia had always played an important role in the Middle East peace process and was still working in this regard so that the process reach tangible results that takes the region out of its current circumstances.
The former Russian Premier called for a just and comprehensive settlement in the region as military power had proved failure to achieve anything.
Mr. Primakov praised the deep, insight vision of President Bashar al-Assad and His Excellency's practical stances vis-à-vis the peace as a continuity to the approach adopted by the great late President Hafez al-Assad who Primakov described as one of the greatest politicians in the region and the world in the 20th century.
He stressed confidence that Syria is innocent of the assassination of Hariri, citing a meeting between him and Hariri five days before the assassination in which the latter stressed to him that he was a friend of Syria and he was going to visit it very soon.
He also criticized the invasion of Iraq and what the US calls as propagation of democracy in the region, pointing out to its current result in Iraq in terms of destructive chaos.
The former Russian Premier saw that uni-polarity in the world would not last long as the world is on its way towards multiplicity and it is not acceptable any more that the US decides the fate of the world.
Mr. Primakov said Israel failed in its latest war on Lebanon whether in destroying Hezbullah party or inciting a national sedition against the party.
The lecture was attended by the Ministers of Information, Culture, Economy and Trade and others as well as a host of intellectuals and media men and the Charge D'affairs at the Russian embassy in Damascus.
Actually, prospects for peace would be much improved if Syria was suddenly and obviously removed!
Oh well, war it is then.
Go Israel, take out Syria.

Remove the current government and military and then let the general population figure out what to do on their own. Then Syria couldn't screw around with Lebannon and Iraq and we could see what Arabs could do on their own..

Bush's biggest foreign policy in the Middle East has been to allow Syria to play the role of the spoiler. I cannot understand why they have not at least mounted covert action against the Alawite Baathist regime in Syria. How we could allow this weak-minded and weak leader to thwart so much of our policies is beyond me. He's aided and abetted those who kill Jews, Lebanese, Iraqis, and Americans. And we refuse to even call him on it.
You need to get rid of Syria, no problem.
One strategic strike would do it.
And then you would have the peace so urgently desired.
