China has pioneered a flavor of communism that is based on two pillars: economic success (even predation) and an absolute throttle-hold on people's liberties. Vietnam is following suit. Don't let Vietnam's increasingly-bulging bank accounts fool you: this is as illibertarian a regime as just about any. You have to go to North Korea to find a regime more disdainful of liberty.

The Russians, under Putin, are also trying to create a similar setup.

only problem for the commies is that once you have a middle class created, the governments have much less of an ability to throttle-hold people's liberties.
It may be a slow process, but just like with China and Russia, once they get a taste of capitalism, its like a snowballl running down the hill. Slowly, but surely, the ones with the money gain power, and the politicians less of it.
