Sentencing for Al Qaeda Operative in NYSE Bomb Plot

LONDON (AP) -- One of the top Al Qaeda operatives known to have been captured in Britain appeared in court amid heavy security on Monday for sentencing in a plot to bomb the New York Stock Exchange, the International Monetary Fund headquarters in Washington and to use a dirty bomb in London.

Dhiren Barot, 34, started plotting in 2000 what he said would be a "memorable black day for the enemies of Islam," prosecutor Edmund Lawson said at the start of what is expected to be a two-day sentencing hearing.

Flanked by two court guards, Barot sat expressionless behind a glass wall as the proceedings began. Born in India but reared in Britain, he pleaded guilty last month to conspiring to commit mass murder in terrorist plots on both sides of the Atlantic. He faces a life sentence.

The criminal plot was to carry out massive explosions in Britain and in the United States, Lawson said, and was meant to kill "hundreds if not thousands of innocent people without warning."......

Thanks. I was just about to post this story. The "students" said they were preparing to "make a film".
Nov 5, 1:39 PM EST

2 college students charged with trying to break into Heinz Field
(AP) -- Two college students are facing criminal charges after police said they tried to break into Heinz Field early Sunday.

Paul Sudeep, 21, and Anand Durvasula, 20, both Carnegie Mellon University students, attempted to climb the fence around the stadium at about 2 a.m. and were caught by surveillance cameras, Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper said.

The men were cooperative when apprehended, telling police they had tickets to Sunday afternoon's Pittsburgh Steelers game and "decided to check things out so they knew where to go," Harper said.

Durvasula was charged with one count of trespass and Sudeep was charged with one count of conspiracy, Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said.
Police found a video camera and tripod in the Lexus sport utility vehicle they were driving. Harper said Sudeep, a film student, was planning to film the final part of a music video featuring Durvasula at Heinz Field.

"We don't know exactly what their intentions were," Harper said. But he added that if the men were trying to figure out where their seats were, "they really could have gone online ... versus coming over and trying to make entry into the stadium."

The pair opened an exterior door at one of the stadium gates, but did not go inside, Harper said. They then continued walking around the stadium, carrying a folding chair. They returned to the gate and Durvasula stepped on the chair and began climbing the fence when stadium security and police arrived, Harper said.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force - made up of the FBI, city and Allegheny County police and the county sheriff's office - conducted a sweep of the stadium with bomb-detecting dogs and found no explosives, Harper said.

Linz -- "If you cannot kill them, at least destroy their websites." This is how radical Islamists call for acts of violence against the owners of several websites in the Internet. The addressees include the Linz author Monika H., who discussed the situation of Muslims women in Austria in her award-winning study "Veiled Environments." Whereas the Islamist community expressed support for the 34-year-old ethnologist, her website was removed from the Internet on Thursday (26 October). The call for acts of violence was discovered by the Middle East Media Research Institute (Memir), which monitors the communications channels in the media of the Islamists worldwide.

The owners of two Internet forums http://www.zeit-wort.at/ also received death threats.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Fight Against Terrorism (BVT) has started to investigate the authors of the threats. Police offered protection to the Linz author, but she rejected it.

Iraqi Forces Deliver Food to Ramadi, Detain Terrorists

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6, 2006 – Iraqi forces, with coalition forces in support, delivered emergency food supplies to a mosque in Ramadi Nov. 4, military officials in Iraq reported.

Iraqi policemen and Iraqi soldiers delivered more than 6,000 pounds of food supplies to the Al Bohemla mosque Nov. 4 to help relieve a food shortage in the central portion of Ramadi.

Local residents approached Iraqi army soldiers during patrols to express their concern about the food shortage.

“Being the sons of Ramadi,” Maj. Kathem from the Iraqi police said, “we must help the people of Ramadi.”

Marines with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, provided external security while soldiers with the 2-1-7 Iraqi Army and policemen from the western Ramadi police station unloaded rice, flour, beans and cooking oil for the people of the area to a local Imam. The Iraqi government provided the food supplies.

In another operation, soldiers detained four suspected terrorists and wounded another in eastern Baghdad Nov. 3.

At about 12:30 a.m., Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, identified a terrorist placing an improvised explosive device along the side of a road in New Baghdad, a neighborhood in eastern Baghdad.

After positively identifying the terrorist actions, the soldiers fired on and wounded the individual emplacing the roadside bomb.

The 4th BCT soldiers later detained four terrorists who were placing IEDs in the same area of New Baghdad. The four terrorists were caught carrying a submachine gun, a grenade and various bomb-making materials. The suspects were detained for further questioning, and an explosive ordnance disposal team destroyed the munitions.

'Known Al Qaeda Terrorist' Nabbed in Khost
Submitted by matt on Mon, 06/11/2006 - 21:39. Al Qaeda | Coalition Forces | Khost | Military | Nangarhar | Security | Taliban | Terrorism
Afgha.com

US Forces captured a 'known Al Qaeda terrorist' along with five other men, including Saudi and Pakistani nationals, according to a statement released by the Coalition today. The identities of those seized in the Khost City raid have been withheld pending the sensitive nature of the operation

The raid took place at a compound in Khost City. The statement indicated no shots were fired and no one was injured during the operation. Several women and children were present in the compound and a cache of military supplies was uncovered.

The stash included armor piercing ammunition, grenades, AK-47 assault rifles and camera equipment that contained surveillance footage of nearby military installations.

Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters are known to operate and live throughout Khost province which borders Pakistan. Fighters from neighboring Pakistan are also known to easily pass through the border area into Afghanistan on a daily basis due to the rugged terrain and well established smuggling routes.

Counter-terrorism operations launched by US forces targeting al Qaeda compounds in Nangahar and Khost provinces has been stepped up since August, netting and killing dozens of suspected al Qaeda militants.

Indian Intelligence To Use 'Internet Tapping' To Trace Maoists, ISI Activities
Unattributed report: "Police to Sniff Out Maoists on Internet"
The Asian Age (Internet Version-WWW)
Thursday, October 26, 2006 T09:44:28Z
Journal Code: 798 Language: ENGLISH Record Type: FULLTEXT
Document Type: OSC Transcribed Text:

Hyderabad, Oct. 25: Intelligence sleuths are planning to use sniffer software to trace the activities of Maoists, their sympathisers and ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) agents on the Internet.

The sleuths have decided to go snooping in the Internet after realising that Maoists and their fellow travellers have turned cyber-savvy and were using emails and chat to transmit key messages.

The police had also come across several instances of ISI suspects using cyber cafes to communicate with their bosses in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

Intelligence agencies have now decided to scan Internet traffic at the local gateways of service providers to sniff out the cyber communication of extremists.

A committee of cyber forensic experts has been set up to filter emails, coded messages, chat and other communication. The sniffer software will also help intelligence agencies track extremists and their operatives in the city.

Special Intelligence Branch (that deals Maoists) is in fact the first state police agency to go for sniffer software after the Central Intelligence Bureau.

"We will be able to record everything without being detected," said a senior intelligence official. "It is just like phone tapping. We can call it Internet tapping."

Director-general of police Swaranjit Sen, however, denied that police had plans to get sniffer software. "Right now there is no such move," he said.

The software is used by major companies who want to prevent their employees from mailing secret data to rival business companies. Intelligence agencies have learned that Maoist top guns are using laptops and Internet for communication from their hideouts too. The police seized several such laptops recently.

The ministry of information and broadcasting also ordered the closure of a pro-Maoist website

http://www.peoplesmarch.com/ www.peoplesmarch.com in May 2006 following a report by intelligence agencies. However, it surfaced again in Google pages as

http://peoplesmarch.googlepages.com/

http://peoplesmarch.googlepages.com/. Mr P. Govindan Kutty, editor of the website, told this correspondent from Kochi in Kerala that the site was not a Maoist venture though it supported the Maoist movement.

"Ours is a registered newspaper and we are legally right," he said. "I was paying an IT company in Kochi to get 50 MB space. But the website was blocked after I&B (Information and Broadcasting Ministry) wrote a letter stating that it was hosting anti-national content. But I started it again in Google pages free of cost."

The website has interviews of top Maoist leaders wanted by the police and write-ups supporting guerrilla warfare.

"I have so many contributors who write anonymously," said Mr Kutty. "I can't reveal the names as police will catch them. There are professors and lecturers from AP who contribute. We are not anti-national. Our orientation is international."

Police sources said that Maoists and jihadi organisations were also maintaining many blogs. "We will write to Google asking them to stop hosting such web pages," said a police officer.

The issue had recently come up in Parliament too with the minister of state for home Sriprakash Jaiswal stating in the Rajya Sabha that the Centre had powers to ask Internet service providers to block websites of extremists.

"1 Dead In Comic Store Shootout"
NBC5 ^ | 4 November 2006 | unknown

Posted on 11/06/2006 2:51:14 PM PST by Lurker

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ROSELLE, Ill. -- A shooting inside a DuPage County comic book store has left the owner of the store injured and an alleged intruder dead.

In a news conference Friday, police said the intruder may have been looking for collectable coins.

Police described the incident as a real shoot out, as the two men emptied their weapons into each other.

Both men are in their 40s.

The owner of the store was taken to Alexian Brothers Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm.

The alleged robber, who is reportedly from Hanover Park, was pronouned dead.

More details from WBBM:

Roselle Shopkeeper Kills Robber In Gunfight

Bob Roberts Reporting

ROSELLE, Ill. (WBBM) -- A 40-year-old parolee from St. Louis was shot dead during a gunfight with the owner of a Roselle collectibles store, who was wounded.

WBBM's Bob Roberts reports.

A digital surveillance video caught the shootout that occurred inside the Westlake Cards, Comics and Coins store, at 1234 W. Lake St., in Roselle. After reviewing the video, DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett declined to press charges against the 49-year-old shopkeeper, a resident of Hanover Park, in the death of ex-convict Geoffrey Webb.

“The question is whether or not this store owner had the right to protect himself and to have a weapon,” Birkett said. “He does. He has a (Firearm Owners Identification) card. He's got that right under Illinois law.”

Roselle Police Chief James Kruger said the surveillance video shows Webb entering the store just before 10:30 a.m. Friday, placing a black bag on the horseshoe-shaped counter and speaking for several minutes with the shopkeeper, whom authorities refused to identify.

Kruger said Webb suddenly pulled a gun from the bag, in which duct tape and handcuffs were later found, and vaulted the counter.

“There was clearly an imminent threat to the store owner's life, and clearly the intruder was in the commission of a forcible felony,” Birkett said.

The shopkeeper told police he had been robbed when the store was located in Glendale Heights, and since then has kept a handgun on his desk in the event of robbery. He was standing next to the desk when Webb vaulted over the display cases.

Kruger said the video appeared to show Webb firing first, wounding the shopkeeper through an arm with one of his shots. The shopkeeper wounded Webb several times, including the apparently fatal bullet to the head."

'Dirty' bomber's plot to hit stations and hotels
The Times ^ | November 7, 2006 | Sean O’Neill and Adam Fresco

Posted on 11/06/2006 3:38:00 PM PST by MadIvan

The Savoy hotel, Waterloo station, the Heathrow Express and a Tube train under the Thames were on a hitlist of targets drawn up by a British al-Qaeda terrorist, a court was told yesterday.

Dhiren Barot will be sentenced today after he admitted planning “back-to-back” attacks on London, which he predicted would have created “a black day for the enemies of Islam”. His two-day hearing, the most significant terrorist case since 9/11, can be reported after The Times and the BBC succeeded at the Court of Appeal in having reporting restrictions lifted.

In detailed documents prepared for the approval of al-Qaeda’s leadership, Barot said that he hoped to emulate the Madrid train bombers who killed hundreds of commuters in March 2004.

One document, found on an encrypted computer disk, conveyed Barot’s enthusiasm about the damage that might be caused by a bomb in a Tube tunnel. He wrote: “Imagine the chaos that would be caused if a powerful explosion were to rip through here and actually rupture the river itself. This would cause pandemonium, what with the explosions, flooding, drowning, etc, that would result.”

Two projects, to build a radioactive “dirty bomb” and to pack stretch limousines with gas cylinders and explosives and detonate them in car parks beneath buildings, appeared to be close to fruition when discovered in summer 2004.

Edmund Lawson, QC, for the prosecution, told Woolwich Crown Court: “In early 2004 Barot travelled to Pakistan, and the obvious inference is that the purpose of the trip was to present the plans for approval and funding. The plans were costed and, most chillingly, they were drawn up as business plans . . . they involved the giving of no warnings and were designed to kill as many innocent civilians as possible.”

But Barot was thwarted by “an outstanding counter-terrorist operation”. He refused to answer questions at first, after being arrested but a “meticulous investigation” which continued for 2½ years in Britain, the United States, Malaysia, Pakistan and the Philippines produced such a weight of evidence that Barot eventually pleaded guilty to planning to carry out mass murder in Britain and the US.
