:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad in Cyberspace
-Full Story-

The setting is familiar to anyone who watches the evening news. A large, executive-style desk, a laptop perched on top, a logo in the background and a screen showing shifting images to reinforce the newsreader's message. The only difference is the presenter, who is swathed in an Arab headdress and masked to hide his identity, and the subject of the broadcast, a call for an Islamic state for Iraq and a vow to use Iraq as a launching pad to crush the "Zionists" in Israel.

Welcome to the "Voice of the Caliphate", the latest offering from the Global Islamic Media Front, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of al-Qaeda and the worldwide jihadist movement.

Distributed over the internet, the mock news format is just one of many employed by al-Qaeda's highly sophisticated propaganda arm.

Threat Matrix : Code of Conduct
Please pay close attention:

***Updated FR Excerpt and Link Only or Deny Posting List due to Copyright Complaints***

There will be NO bashing any mods, it will be taken private or there will be NO MORE Threat Matrix !!! That comes from the top!

Please everyone here review the following rules, they are not posted just for fun, they must be adhered to!

Do lead by example - Nothing improves a forum more than posters who reason sharply, write well, and have some perspective about it all. Be one of them.

Do preview - Preview twice, post once. And, ahem, close your HTML tags before you hit the reply button.

Do keep it clean - A bruise or two between Freepers is tolerable, but refrain from abusive attacks, engaging in senseless flame wars, and using profane language. Considering the range of topics we discuss, it's hard to be a family site, but that's what we aim for when at all possible.

Do "take it to the Alley" - The Alley is a public chat room. A link to it is provided on the latest posts page. Invite people there if you want to talk things over or settle a score, so to speak, off site.

Do use common sense - If you read a post that sounds too good or strange to be true, it probably is.

Do stay on topic - FR has varied topics for whatever you need to say

Do keep "vanity" posts to a minimum - Free Republic is primarily a place to discuss news, articles, and editorials. Vanity posts, creations of the poster him or herself, should meet a high standard of quality before one is even considered worthy of posting.

Don't jump threads - If you get involved in an argument in one thread, it's considered poor manners to restart the previous argument in the middle of an unrelated thread.

Don't play games - Don't represent yourself as another person, create or use another screen name to avoid a revocation of posting privileges, misrepresent the site or your role in it

We cannot stress the following enough:
{{{Don't be a whiner - If you really, really find Free Republic or Threat Matrix not to your liking, let the webmaster know directly (, learn to live with it, or move along.}}}

Iraqi mullah with Iran ties to visit U.S.
Persian Journal ^ | Dec 1, 2006

Posted on 12/01/2006 8:22:30 PM PST by TexKat

Mullah Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, a top Iraqi Shiite leader with close ties to Iran, will meet with President Bush next week, the White House confirmed Friday. Mullah leads the powerful Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq, or SCIRI, a rival group to the political movement led by firebrand Shiite mullah Muqtada al-Sadr.

U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the meeting was set for Monday.

"President Bush looks forward to an exchange of views and a discussion of important issues facing Iraq today," Johndroe said.

Also, a senior administration official said Bush will meet with a Sunni leader -- Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi -- in January at the White House.

The visits come against a backdrop of deadly Sunni-Shiite sectarian warfare in Iraq that has led some observers to say a civil war has engulfed the country.

Bush returned from a summit Thursday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Jordan focusing on the deteriorating security situation.

Al-Hakim and Bush will discuss the political crisis in Iraq, said mullah's aide, Haitham Husseini.

"Two in Houston charged with planning to fund, fight with Taliban"

Note: The following text is a quote:

December 02, 2006

"Do you want to see the passport of a terrorist?"

"Syed Maaz Shah’s arrest and arraignment came after a federal investigation of activity on property owned by the Islamic Society of Greater Houston." Another player emerges in connection with this story. "UTD Student Still In Jail, Awaits Houston Transfer," by Robert Riggs for CBS 11 News:

(CBS 11 News) A University of Texas at Dallas sophomore who was arrested Wednesday on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm is being held without bond and awaits transfer to Houston in connection with a conspiracy to aid a global terrorist network..

Syed Maaz Shah’s arrest and arraignment came after a federal investigation of activity on property owned by the Islamic Society of Greater Houston in Willis, which is just north of Houston.

In testimony before United States Magistrate Judge Jeff Kaplan, a FBI special agent assigned to the international counter-terrorism squad described 19-year-old Shah as a self-proclaimed terrorist bent on jihad.

“He held up his passport to the other members of the group and said, ‘Do you want to see the passport of a terrorist?’ ” the agent testified.

The FBI agent further testified Shah was pictured with two Muslim college students -- Kobie Williams and Adnan Mirza -- who were arrested in Houston earlier this week for an alleged conspiracy to aid the Taliban.

Federal prosecutors allege all three engaged in paramilitary rifle training with other Muslim students at the campground in Willis and bragged about joining the Taliban to fight against U.S. forces.

Shah was accused in court of training to attack coalition soldiers in Afghanistan and has been charged with possession of a firearm by a non-U.S. citizen.
Shah's attorney, Donald Fulton, declined to discuss the Taliban allegations and tried to minimize the gun charge.

“Gee if everything that I did training with weapons from BB guns on up resulted in criminal charges, they would have me behind bars today. It’s a different world we live in now.”

That's just silly. But in closing, no story of this kind is complete without the following description of what a swell guy the accused is:

Shah’s aunt, Rubina Shah, said her nephew is very religious, but is not violent.

“He’s an excellent kid, an excellent student. What else is there to say?”

Lebanon cabinet, opposition in stand-off

Lebanon's Western-backed cabinet vowed not to cave in to calls to resign after a massive demonstration led by the pro-Syrian group Hezbollah, as protesters camped outside government offices.

The show of force in central Beirut tightened the political deadlock in the country which has been nearly paralyzed because of a fierce struggle for supremacy between pro- and anti-Syrian camps within the power-sharing regime.

Crowds of protesters thronged the streets of the capital on Friday, calling for the ouster of the "corrupt" leadership and temporarily blocking access to Prime Minister Fuad Siniora's government headquarters.

"The massive demonstration... has given Lebanon one of the most difficult tests that the country has known in a long while," warned the pro-Syrian Al-Akhbar daily.

Egypt fears Lebanon civil war if protests continue

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said on Saturday he feared continued street demonstrations, especially if they became sectarian, could turn Lebanon into a battlefield.

On Friday hundreds of thousands of Hezbollah-led protesters rallied in Beirut to try to force the resignation of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's U.S.-backed government. The protest continued on Saturday.

"Wisdom is required in dealing with internal differences," Mubarak told journalists in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he was meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"What I fear is that if the demonstrations continue, and take on a sectarian form, supporters of these sects from outside Lebanon will join in and no one will be able to control it, especially if it continues for a long time."

Ahmadinejad says US is the problem in Iraq

2 December 2006

DOHA — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the United States on Friday of stirring up divisions between Iraq’s Shias, Sunnis and Kurds, saying Washington is “the cause of the problem” in the war-torn country.

His comments came a day after US President George W. Bush met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki, urging the Iraqi leader to crack down on Shia militias blamed in sectarian violence. Iran is believed to back some of the militias.

Ahmadinejad spoke in an interview with the Arab news network Al Jazeera during a visit to the Qatari capital Doha to attend the opening of the Asian Games.

In Doha, the Iranian leader held talks with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, from the militant Hamas movement, which is allied to Iran.

Ahmadinejad repeated Iran’s calls for the United States to pull its troops out of Iraq.

Iraqis “know how to govern themselves and provide their own security. You are the reason of the problem,” he told Al Jazeera, looking at the camera and addressing the United States and Britain. “Get out of Iraq and leave the Iraqi people alone.”

Iraqi Army, Coalition Detain, Kill Insurgents; Iraqis Killed in Suicide Attack

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1, 2006 – In a string of operations across Iraq this week, Iraqi forces detained 28 suspects, coalition forces killed 17 insurgents and rescued three Iraqi hostages, and four Iraqis were killed in a suicide attack, military officials in Iraq reported.
The 9th Iraqi Army Division, with coalition support, detained 28 suspected insurgents for questioning in an operation within the Iraqi capital today in Rusafa. U.S. attack helicopters were used in support of the mission to assist the ground elements with their mission. An assortment of small arms and munitions also were seized during the operation.

Elsewhere, coalition forces used air-delivered precision ordnance to kill three insurgents today in Ubaydi. Insurgents attacked coalition forces with small-arms fire and then attempted to flee in a vehicle. In response to the attack, coalition forces used precision ordnance to destroy the vehicle and the insurgents inside. Aside from the vehicle, there was no further damage.

In another operation, coalition air and ground forces combined to kill 14 insurgents and wound two at about 2 a.m. yesterday after the individuals engaged a coalition convoy with small-arms fire southwest of Samarra.

While the insurgents fled in trucks and motorcycles, Task Force Lightning attack helicopters tracked them for several miles and used two guided bombs to destroy one of the vehicles. Subsequently, helicopters and strike aircraft engaged the remaining vehicles, killing or wounding all of the insurgents.

Upon further investigation of the site, Task Force Lightning soldiers discovered more than 1,500 rounds of small-arms ammunition and various semi-automatic machine guns including six AK-47s, two heavy machineguns, two destroyed motorcycles with homemade machine gun mounts and one rocket-propelled-grenade launcher.

Separately, Iraqi police successfully engaged a suicide car bomber attempting to breach an entry-control point leading to a police station in the Dawasa neighborhood Nov. 29 at about 12:15 p.m.

The Iraqi police prevented the terrorist from breaching the entry control point, but the bomb exploded outside the checkpoint, killing four Mosul citizens and the suicide car bomber and injuring 29. The four citizens killed in the blast included two children and two adults. Those injured were transported to Mosul general hospital for treatment. One Iraqi police officer received treatment for superficial wounds and was released.

"Iraqi police in Ninewa province are vigilant to these types of attacks," said Army Maj. Adam Rocke, operations officer for 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. "The sad part is the innocent citizens who are killed or injured as a result of these cowardly acts, especially the children.”

In another operation, three handcuffed hostages were rescued from insurgents by soldiers of the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, near Forward Operating Base Loyalty on Nov. 29. A fourth handcuffed hostage was found nearby, dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

The three rescued hostages were discovered after the U.S. soldiers noticed an illegal checkpoint being manned by six individuals in military uniforms. One of the six manning the checkpoint had a fake Ministry of Interior identification. The six suspects caught running the illegal checkpoint were detained by U.S. forces for questioning

Elsewhere, soldiers from Multinational Division Baghdad uncovered a sizeable cache of munitions in a northwestern neighborhood of the Iraqi capital Nov. 29.

After receiving a tip, soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, conducted a combat patrol to search a house of a suspected mortar man. When the troops arrived at the residence, there was no one at the home. During the search of the house, they discovered a weapons cache. They found 16 82 mm mortar rounds, one 60 mm mortar round, one 82 mm mortar tube with a tripod, one 60 mm mortar tube with a base plate, 11 grenades, one machinegun with three full magazines, one rocket-propelled-grenade launcher sight, one set of body armor with plates, one set of body armor without plates, 42 mortar primers, 59 grenade fuses, two radios, and a bomb protective suit.

Unlicensed money transmitters sentenced for sending millions of dollars to Yemen

BUFFALO, NY - United States Attorney Terrance P. Flynn and Peter J. Smith, special agent in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Office of Investigations in Buffalo announced that two individuals convicted of illegally transmitting money to Yemen received lengthy prison sentences. The money transmitting business was illegal because it was not licensed under New York State law and unregistered under federal law. U.S. District Judge William Skretny sentenced the three Lackawanna men Thursday.

Mohamed Albanna was sentenced to five years imprisonment and three years supervised release.

Ali A. Albanna received a sentence of 56 months imprisonment and two years supervised release.

Ali Taher Elbaneh received was given one-year probation, with six months home detention.

Smith said, "Money transmittal businesses that operate underground and outside the law pose significant homeland security threats. As we have seen in the past, these types of businesses can be and have been exploited by criminal organizations and even terrorist groups to move funds virtually anywhere in the world with no questions asked. Closing down this vulnerability is a priority for ICE."

Judge Skretny also signed orders directing Mohamed Albanna to forfeit $100,000, Ali A. Albanna to forfeit $50,000 and Ali Taher Elbaneh to forfeit $50,000. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy C. Lynch said the defendants pled guilty this June 23 to operating an illegal money transmitting business from November 1, 2001, until December 17, 2002.

Flynn said the maximum penalty faced by each defendant was five years imprisonment, but that, in accordance with the written plea agreements filed June 23, Mohamed Albanna agreed to a sentence of five years, Ali A. Albanna agreed to a sentence of at least 51 months, and that there was no sentencing agreement with respect to Ali Taher Elbaneh.

Flynn said the illegal money transmitting business was operated principally by Mohamed Albanna and Ali A. Albanna from the premises of Queen City Cigarettes and Candy, a wholesale distribution business located at 1282 Clinton Street in Buffalo, New York.

At the sentencing Assistant United States Attorney Timothy Lynch said the money transmitting business operated by the defendants transmitted millions of dollars from the Queen City business in Buffalo to Yemen, and received transmissions from Yemen in the years 2001 and 2002. Lynch said Ali Taher Elbaneh assisted Mohamed Albanna and Ali A. Albanna in the operation of the business.

Mr. Lynch also pointed out that Ali A. Albanna personally handled a $1,500 transfer from Yahya Goba in Western New York to Kamal Derwish in Yemen, which took place after Mr. Goba was being investigated for attending a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan.

Responding to comments made on behalf of Mohamed Albanna, Lynch told the court Albanna knew about federal registration requirements, and also taught his customers about how to structure transactions to avoid reporting requirements for money transfers of more than $10,000. The prosecutor noted there were large monetary transfers that law enforcement would have investigated if they had not been split into smaller parts. Also, Lynch told Judge Skretny that the defendants money transmitting business grew from about $200,000 in 1999 to $3 million in 2002. For nearly all of 2002, Mr. Lynch said, Mohamed Albanna knew about the licensing requirement.

U.S. Attorney Flynn noted that on a specific occasion in September 2002, the defendants illegal money transmitting business conducted an $11,000 cash transmission from Yemen to Buffalo, and failed to report that transmission, as required for transactions of more than $10,000. Mr. Flynn said cash transactions must be reported to the IRS if the amount of the transaction is more than $10,000.

Flynn also noted that Ali A. Albanna admitted in his plea agreement that in March of 2002, he handled the money transfer from Yahya Goba in the Western District of New York, to Kamal Derwish in Yemen, but that, instead of identifying the sender as Yahya Goba and the recipient as Kamal Derwish, Ali A. Albanna entered the name of a Goba relative as the sender, and the name Abdulwali Kushasha as the recipient in Queen City money transmission ledgers. Flynn said Kushasha has been charged in this case as a co-conspirator, but has not been arrested and remains a fugitive.

Flynn said this case also involved over $300,000 in forfeitures and that, prior to the guilty pleas, a total of $179,736 was forfeited by the government. Flynn said that about $53,000 of that total was cash found in a safe at Queen City during the execution of a search warrant by federal agents on December 17, 2002, and that the remaining $126,000 was seized from Queen City=s bank account that was used to facilitate the illegal money transmitting business. Mohamed Albanna also has agreed to forfeit an additional $100,000; Ali A. Albanna an additional $50,000, and Ali Taher Elbaneh an additional $10,000.

Judge Skretny permitted Mohamed Albanna and Ali A. Albanna to surrender voluntarily to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to commence serve of their prison sentences.

Today's sentences were the result of an investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Internal Revenue Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the United States Secret Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
-- ICE --

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was established in March 2003 as the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is comprised of four integrated divisions that form a 21st century law enforcement agency with broad responsibilities for a number of key homeland security priorities.

Make refugee bid in Canada, Iraqis advised

Snip: "I'm telling clients, 'If you can make it here, that's your best bet,' " says Chantal Desloges, an immigration lawyer who handles many Iraqi cases. "I don't want to hear about how you get here, but if you do, your chances of getting in are virtually 100 per cent," she said.

Imams execute successful jihad plan in US airport

Snip: The warriors of Islam have discovered a far more effective weapon than a sword, an RPG, or a broadcast beheading. It's the political correct movement of the West, which will prove to be our ultimate undoing. Grabbing our ankles in the name of tolerance and diversity has sealed our fate, which the Muslims understand entirely. This incident aboard the US Air flight was a battle front in a war on the West, and the mission was accomplished. It was a carefully planned operation which was executed perfectly, and is now achieving the desired result. Not every battle of Jihad includes a bomb or a sword.
