Australian airports under guard

SECURITY inside and outside airports across Australia will be beefed up in response to the embassy bombing in Jakarta.
Prime Minister John Howard announced today that stricter measures would be placed on parking at airports, including times limits on vehicles dropping off or picking up airport passengers.
The news came as Mr Howard also revealed a warning of attacks on western embassies had been passed on to Indonesian police 45 minutes prior to yesterday's blast.
Australian authorities didn't receive that warning, apprently made via an SMS message, until several hours after the explosion killed nine people and injured more than 180, including a five-year-old Australian girl.
Mr Howard said the national terror threat would remain at "medium", despite talk of extra security around the country, and he would not be drawn on any specific threats.
"Airports are not under any specific threat," he said. "I have simply asked that all security measures already in place be reviewed."
British Prime Minister Tony Blair took similar measures at airports in the UK when plans to shoot down aircraft as they left the runway at London Heathrow were discovered.
There will be extra screening on all flights and at all gates, particularly flights to and from Indonesia and flights conducted by Indonesia's national carrier Garuda.
A more obvious presence of Australian Federal Police (AFP) special forces will also become apparent in public areas, Mr Howard confirmed, adding that more funding will be made available to boost numbers in that area.
Mr Howard was the first to reveal that any warning had been given to police in Jakarta before yesterday's deadly bombing.
He said at 9.30am (12.30am AEST), Polri - Indonesia's police force - received word that if radical Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was not released from custody, western embassies in the country would be targeted with bombs.
The AFP was not made aware of that threat until 5.49pm (8.49pm AEST), more than seven hours after the explosion had ripped the gates off the Australian embassy in Jakarta.
AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty said even if the warning had been passed on promptly, it was unlikely to have made a difference.
"It really didn't give you anything that you could act upon anyway, because these sorts of threats come in quite regularly, not only here in Indonesia, but in other parts of the world," Mr Keelty said.
Bashir, who is in detention awaiting trial over earlier terror strikes, denounced the bombing, saying it was no way to fight on behalf of Islam.
Indonesian police earlier denied receiving any such warning.
"I am certainly not pointing any fingers at the Indonesian police force and there is no suggestion the Australian public has been kept in the dark," Mr Howard said.
"If you receive a message and a bomb goes of 45 minutes later, it's not reasonable to condemn the Indonesian police (for not passing that message on)."
Mr Howard said intelligence agencies believed that the blast might be in retaliation for Australia's increased and public ties with Indonesian police and intelligence agencies.
The Prime Minister also reiterated that Jemaah Islamiah remained a chief suspect.
"The view of the (intelligence) agencies is that it is JI," he said.
"It may involve some offshoot of JI. These organisations tend to divide but it was certainly a JI type of operation."
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has warned Australians not to travel to Indonesia.
DFAT has also told any Australians already in the country to consider leaving, and many airlines have increased services to compenstate for an increase in traffic.

The Department of State is deeply concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks against U.S. citizens and interests abroad, as well as the potential for demonstrations and violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. U.S. citizens are reminded that demonstrations and rioting can occur at any time. In reaction to the execution of hostages in Iraq, there have been demonstrations and associated violence in the hostages’ country of origin. While Americans are generally not the targets in such incidents, U.S. citizens could be caught up in the violence. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.
The Department of State remains concerned by indications that al-Qaida and affiliated groups continue to prepare to strike U.S. interests abroad. Al-Qaida and its associated organizations have struck in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Future al-Qaida attacks could possibly involve non-conventional weapons such as chemical or biological agents as well as conventional weapons of terror, to include explosive devices.
Terrorist actions may include, but are not limited to, suicide operations, assassinations, hijackings, bombings or kidnappings. These may involve aviation and other transportation and maritime interests. Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. These may include facilities where U.S. citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, including residential areas, business offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels and public areas. U.S. citizens are encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.
U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or suspend public services from time to time to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Americans abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its consular information program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-317-472-2 328.

IRAN ARRESTS 80 EVANGELICALS
Amid Fears of New Crackdown on Christians

TEHRAN, IRAN (ANS) -- Iranian police invaded the annual conference of Iran’s Assemblies of God and arrested at least 80 church leaders at the church’s denominational center near Tehran as part of the worst crack down on evangelical believers in a decade, a Christian news agency reported Friday, September 10.
Compass news agency said security forces raided the meeting "without warning" in Karaj, 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of the capital, after they surrounded the church’s garden property Thursday, September 9.
Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying that all men and women present at the first day of their annual meetings were detained. "The police came from everywhere," an Iranian Christian reportedly said. "There were a lot of them."
The Christian, whose name was not identified apparently for security reasons, claimed that "every single person present was put under arrest, blindfolded and taken in for interrogation."
Compass, which has close contacts with persecuted Christians in the region, said that the detained believers were driven around blindfolded for several hours so they would be unable to understand where they were being taken.
CLOSELY MONITORED
Each of them were reportedly questioned separately by security officials, and the questions revealed that authorities had very precise information about each person, including his or her activities, relatives and other personal data, Compass said, quoting Iranian sources.
Although most of the evangelical leaders were released, ten male pastors were still in custody, and their where whereabouts are unknown to their families, who have not been allowed to contact them, the news agency said.
"This is the biggest crisis for evangelical believers in the country since three Protestant pastors were murdered 10 years ago," another unidentified Iranian source told Compass.
ORDAINED MINISTERS
Six ordained ministers were named among the prisoners, identified by their given names of Vartan, Soren, Harmik, George, Omid and Farhad. Another two men serving as pastors and two church elders were identified as Neshan, Hamid, Henry and Robert. The pastors serve in congregations located in Tehran, Urumiyeh, Rasht, Ahwaz, Boshahr and Karaj.
All the evangelicals released Thursday night were forbidden to attend church services Friday, the weekly day of rest in Iran when most churches meet for worship, Compass reported. "Anyway, all their pastors are now under arrest, so there will be no one to preach when the congregations gather for services," its source said.
"As the world’s only theocracy, Iran has strictly proscribed the activities of its evangelical Christian citizens, closing down their churches and arresting known converts to Christianity. Under Islamic law, apostates who leave Islam are subject to the death penalty," Compass commented.
Iranian officials have not commented on the case.
