The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Some American Mosques Carry Extremist Tracts, Study Says
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- Mosques across the U.S. continue to carry books and pamphlets describing non-Muslims as "infidels" and promoting intolerance against Western society, according to a forthcoming study by Freedom House, a U.S. human-rights group.

Despite vows from American Islamic leaders after Sept. 11, 2001, to proselytize peacefully, New York based Freedom House researchers found 57 documents with incendiary material in more than a dozen mosques and Islamic centers in six states and Washington, D.C., visited over the past year.

"Threat Matrix is a politically incorrect zone"
From TM'er and Freeper ~Oorang~

Threat Matrix : Code of Conduct
Please pay close attention:
PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES

There will be NO bashing any mods, it will be taken private or there will be NO MORE Threat Matrix !!! That comes from the top!

Please everyone here review the following rules, they are not posted just for fun, they must be adhered to!

Do lead by example - Nothing improves a forum more than posters who reason sharply, write well, and have some perspective about it all. Be one of them.

Do preview - Preview twice, post once. And, ahem, close your HTML tags before you hit the reply button.

Do keep it clean - A bruise or two between Freepers is tolerable, but refrain from abusive attacks, engaging in senseless flame wars, and using profane language. Considering the range of topics we discuss, it's hard to be a family site, but that's what we aim for when at all possible.

Do "take it to the Alley" - The Alley is a public chat room. A link to it is provided on the latest posts page. Invite people there if you want to talk things over or settle a score, so to speak, off site.

Do use common sense - If you read a post that sounds too good or strange to be true, it probably is.

Do stay on topic - FR has varied topics for whatever you need to say

Do keep "vanity" posts to a minimum - Free Republic is primarily a place to discuss news, articles, and editorials. Vanity posts, creations of the poster him or herself, should meet a high standard of quality before one is even considered worthy of posting.

Don't jump threads - If you get involved in an argument in one thread, it's considered poor manners to restart the previous argument in the middle of an unrelated thread.

Don't play games - Don't represent yourself as another person, create or use another screen name to avoid a revocation of posting privileges, misrepresent the site or your role in it

We cannot stress the following enough:
{{{Don't be a whiner - If you really, really find Free Republic or Threat Matrix not to your liking, let the webmaster know directly (jimrob@psnw.com), learn to live with it, or move along.}}}

If the u is a long vowel, like oo... it means closed/locked/bolted.

As a person's name, it may mean something else.

I'm pleased as can be...

I knew it was a great idea when it came...and I knew FReepers would see that and run with it.

I suggested in an email to the White House that the President and everyone in the administration should provide a photo op with the same thing!

*grin*

Wouldn't that be cool?

"Improvised Bombs Baffle Army"

By Noah Shachtman  |   Also by this reporter Page 1 of 2 next »
02:00 AM Jan. 26, 2005 PT

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Almost anything that blows up can be turned into an IED, from grenades to plastic explosives to leftover mines. The most everyday of electronics -- a cell phone, a garage door opener, a child's remote-control toy -- can be recast as a trigger. And the hiding places for the handmade bombs are everywhere: in the ground, aboard a truck, even inside an animal carcass."

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman

This information is current as of today, Sun Jan 30 2005 02:23:19 GMT-0800.

Kuwait

January 28, 2005

This public announcement is being issued to update travelers on security concerns in Kuwait following recent violent incidents and to alert Americans that terrorists may target housing areas of Westerners. This public announcement supersedes the public announcement for Kuwait issued December 23, 2004, and expires on July 25, 2005.

In two separate incidents on January 10 and 15, 2005, Kuwaiti security officials and militants engaged in fatal shootouts. The Department of State wishes to advise American citizens that the possibility exists of further violent clashes between security officials and militants as police continue attempts to locate and arrest individuals connected to the earlier shootings. The Department reminds all U.S. citizens in Kuwait to exercise caution, maintain a low profile, and avoid areas where westerners are known to congregate. Heightened security awareness should be exercised in all residential complexes, as terrorists have specifically targeted a variety of Western housing facilities in the past.

Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Increased security at official U.S. facilities may lead terrorists and their sympathizers to seek softer targets such as public transportation, residential areas and apartment complexes, oil-related facilities and personnel, and public areas where people congregate including restaurants, hotels, clubs, and shopping areas. U.S. citizens are advised to immediately report any unusual or suspicious activity in Kuwait to the Kuwaiti police or to the U.S. Embassy.

U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for further terrorist actions against U.S. citizens abroad, including in the Persian Gulf region. U.S. citizens planning to travel to Kuwait should consult the Department's travel information and register their trip at the Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov. U.S. citizens who travel to, or remain in, Kuwait should also register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait and enroll in the warden system (emergency alert network) to obtain updated information on travel and security in Kuwait. Warden messages can be found on the U.S. Embassy Kuwait website: http://kuwait.usembassy.gov.

Travelers should consult the Department of State's latest Consular Information Sheet for Kuwait, Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement at http://travel.state.gov. American citizens may also obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada, and 317-472-2328 from overseas. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays.)

"You need to find the right frequency in order to stop it," he said. "And
that's not easy, with all of these cell phones and garage door openers
being used to trigger the IEDs."

Instead, Goure believes, the most effective IED countermeasure might
be a pulse of electromagnetic energy that can "fry the circuits of these
bombs."

We TM'ers knew about this, remember when the garage door openers all quit in Las Vegas, then wasn't it Florida?

All the radios in Seattle quit last year too.

LOL

As for anything as a bomb, does everyone remember the 4th of July warnings for black plastic bag bombs?

They were setting them off in Louisiana on the lakes, several of them.

In Seattle, there was a small fishing
boat that contained a black trash bag bomb.

A local fisherman, realized the boat was 'wrong' should not have been there and snagged it with his fish hook and kept it from hitting the big boats it was drifting toward.

This was in the summer, the Seattle PI, newspaper as I recall.

Either Labor Day or 4th of July, I remember warning my daughter to not go on a picnic and pull any bags out of the water, and the warning also included the Styrofoam ice chests.

Last year there was a gift of a teddy bear to a small boy,
Florida, the family was on vacation, in a motel.

A woman gave the bear to the little boy, and when they attempted to board the plane, the bear was found to have explosives in it.

The family was not charged, as they were simply a family doing Disney World or whatever it was.

Bin Laden sent Iraqi arrested in Germany: report

(Reuters)

29 January 2005

BERLIN

An Iraqi arrested in Germany on suspicion of plotting an Al Qaeda suicide attack in Iraq said he was sent on his mission by Osama bin Laden himself, a German magazine reported on Saturday.

German state prosecutors believe Ibrahim Mohammed K., a 29-year-old Iraqi believed to be a high-ranking Al Qaeda figure, recruited Yasser Abu S., a 31-year-old stateless Palestinian from Libya, as a future suicide bomber in Iraq.

The two men were arrested last Sunday in the western city of Mainz, which US President George W. Bush is due to visit next month. However, prosecutors said there was no indication the two had planned an attack in Germany.

Der Spiegel magazine said the Iraqi had told the other man he had been sent by bin Laden personally to Germany. It gave no details on the date or location of the meeting.

“Yes, he sent me to work, to sell and buy,” the magazine quoted him as saying, citing a conversation from their Mainz apartment that investigating authorities recorded.

Authorities believe the terms refer to the recruitment and placement of volunteers for Jihad, or “holy war”, the magazine said in a preview of an article due to appear on Monday.

Prosecutors said on Sunday the two planned to pretend that Yasser Abu S. had been killed in a car accident in Egypt and claim over 800,000 euros ($1.04 million) from a life insurance policy to fund the suicide bombing and other operations.

Federal Prosecutor Kay Nehm said the Iraqi also had sought to acquire nuclear material for use in an attack. The suspect had been in contact with a group in Luxembourg which had nuclear material, but Nehm said it was not suitable for a bomb.:yikes

The prosecutor’s office said the Iraqi had visited Al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan many times before the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States in 2001 and remained for a year afterwards, fighting US forces there.

In this time, Nehm said he had contact with Osama bin Laden and other leading Al Qaeda figures, such as Ramzi bin al-Shaibah, who is now in US custody.

Prosecutors said the leaders persuaded the Iraqi suspect to recruit suicide bombers in Europe. With his German travel documents, he was able to travel across the continent, arriving in Germany in September 2002, they said.

The Iraqi’s name does not, however, feature on published FBI or United Nations lists of Al Qaeda members.

Off to a good start it seems with successful elections in Iraq. The terrorist scum look sooooo weak in the eyes of the Arab world. I wonder if they think they're going to recoup their lost face by a massive strike elsewhere?

Iraqi Elections - It appears that the terrorists were not successful in shutting down the elections or even massing nation-wide attacks. Mosel had low turn-out (current ops base of Al-Zarqawi) but elsewhere great turnout. MSM is suprised at turnout (suspect they were hoping for the election to flop, just to be able to blame Bush). Recent report of more bombs, but this is after polls have been closed. This is a hard hit to the terrorists.
