If she'd done it when there were no children around, I'd probably agree that she shouldn't have been fired, but it doesn't set a good example of behavior for the youth.

That is the issue, not free speech. These were elementary kids.

Agreed, flipping the bird with students on the bus is grounds for immediate dismissal.

Frankly flipping the bird to someone just because you don't agree with their politics whether kids are around or not, shows you to be of such low moral character that you should not be around children as far as I'm concerned.
