Microsoft Is Set to Give Linux a Boost Through Partnership With Novell

By ROBERT A. GUTH

November 2, 2006 2:59 p.m.

Microsoft Corp. is entering into an unusual partnership with Novell Inc. that gives a boost to the Linux operating system, a rival to the software giant's Windows software, according to people familiar with the companies.

Under the pact, which isn't final, Microsoft will offer sales support of Suse Linux, a version of the operating system sold by Novell. The two companies have also agreed to develop technologies to make it easier for users to run both Suse Linux and Microsoft's Windows on their computers. The two companies are expected to announce details of their plan today at a press conference in San Francisco.

In addition, Microsoft won't assert rights over patents over software technology that may be incorporated into Suse Linux, the people said. Businesses that use Linux have long worried that Microsoft would one day file patent infringement suits against sellers of the rival software.

The pact marks an unusual level of cooperation between two longtime rivals. Microsoft has been battling all versions of Linux, but has faced pressure to assure that customers can run both Windows and Linux without problems.

By forging a peace pact with one seller of Linux, Microsoft could raise pressure on Red Hat Inc., the leading provider of Linux, and a Novell rival. Last week, Oracle Corp. announced that it would start selling its own support for Red Hat's version of Linux....

Grow up. I'm an American, and you're over in Europe somewhere, so of course we're going to disagree on some things. I chose original American products, like Windows and Unix, and you chose cheap foreign clones of them, put out by Russian cosmonauts and named strange things like "Ubuntu". Figure out how to make something on your own, instead of just copying the work of Americans, before you go slinging any insults my way, loser.

Disagree? I'll say this openly - you're a troll. You do nothing but add discord and stupidity to every thread you post on.

I posted what I posted to you as partially an intellectual experiment - I was wondering if opening your mouth and spouting off was more important to you than the causes you supposedly represent. If you really believe in Windows as much as you do, then you ought to shut the hell up - because you're possibly the most despised and off-putting defender of that cause I've ever encountered.

If you really do believe the garbage you spout, you ought to take into account what I and others have said - why you get called every name in the book, why people hate your guts - and maybe, just maybe, the glint of daylight will enter that thick skull of yours and you'll realise that you do your cause no credit. You add nothing to Free Republic and quite frankly, the best contribution you could make to mankind is to cut your own tongue out and stick your hands in a rotary fan set on High.

Bye now.

Liar. Calling me a "sickening piece of dog excrement" is the absolute definition of the spouting off you're trying to accuse me of. You're the sick troll, embarrassed that you're being exposed for using cheap foreign clones of American products put out by Russian cosmonauts, supporting fanatical green party leftists like Richard Stallman, and communist governments who are dead set on destroying US intellectual property laws. I stand opposed to those leftist causes, but you're so cheap and devoid of principle you're selling out for the few dollars you may have saved on some crappy software. Yes, we definitely disagree, because I am an American conservative, and you are a foreigner that believes in leftist liberal giveaways like your beloved "Ubuntu", and instead of debating facts, in typical leftist slimeball fashion began your 'dialog' with pathetic infantile insults. "MadIvan" LOL. No wonder you love the Russian cosmonaut's knock off of Unix.

Thanks, you proved my point eloquently. You're so wrapped up in your pitiful ego that you speak out to the detriment of the cause you supposedly represent.

I'll bet you can't even leave this reply aside and will have to post back, with some other nonsense. Everyone knows what you are - this is why you get called "BrassBuzzard" among other things; why you haven't grasped hold of the fact that your very unpopularity and lack of sense are damaging to the things you believe is very interesting.

Go on, I dare you NOT to post back. I dare you! You won't be able to resist! You just have to!

Good luck with your website pimping your communist software. Even Bill Clinton seems to be a fan.

Whining about my conservatism isn't defending you from your admittance you constantly pimp communist software on your website, whether you have the brains to realize it or not.

You're not living on the same planet as the rest of us, Buzzard. I am stating facts - you damage the cause you represent. Calling Linux communist looks particularly ridiculous with products like this available:

Ubuntu Christian Edition.

I'm done talking to you - unlike you, I can walk away, and turn the rubbish you spout into something good - helping Linux spread, yes, even to the United States.

Cheers!

Microsoft will either kill off linux or impose expensive licensing fees and verified copy installation schemes.

Microsoft does nothing as well as repackage smaller companies ideas since that has been their operation from the begininng.

A monopoly is not good.

What, you've never heard of Christian Communism? Actually, you're probably one of the freaks that support it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_communism

I'm more in line with PJPII's assesment of communism, it's a false idol that tries to replace God with socialistic governments.

http://religion-cults.com/pope/communism.htm

Keep showing your ignorance and support of communism, ruuskie.

Yes sir, my mistake, the gentlemen said he wanted to finally drop the insults he started and actually speak facts, and I believe that was all that I posted? Where should concerns for foreign posters who name themselves after Russian tyrants, and launch unprovoked insults, be aired? I apologize if outing his other questionable personal issues was inappropritate. I seek your advice. Thank you very much.

Post your addres and we can send you a pound of Colby to go with that whine.

If Windows really is so superior to everything else it need not fear any other operating system.

Monopoly is not good.

Monopoly is not good.

Which is why I recommend Apple OSX and Sun Solaris if you want something different, both being US Unix, not foreign clones of it.

This may be hard for you to grasp, but Linux != Communism and Linux -\> Communism. Saying Linux is communist because it is used by Communist makes about as much sense as declaring oil or oxygen communist. Linux is a tool and just like any other it can be used for good or ill, but the tool itself is neutral.

I'm more in line with PJPII's assesment of communism,

So, you're a Catholic?

it's a false idol that tries to replace God with socialistic governments.

Actually, they try to replace God with Man, making Man God. A newer form of the oldest lie.

No I understand perfectly, the "father of free software" and leader of the FSF and GNU/GPL is a radical green party leftist that wants to destroy individual intellectual property laws and replace them with a federal "software tax". His license allows the free transfer of technology to communist governments, and has been identified as communistic by those on both the right and left, including books such as Cybercommunism, long before I began speaking out against it.

Your endless denials are merely your youthful uninformed opinion, based on emotion and little on fact, in my opinion. There are plenty of available software choices without selling yourself out to that from leftists like Stallman, much less arguing endlessly in defense of his works.

And Bill Gates ranks pretty close to a red himself. If you use this perspective you can buy precious few goods and services even from the "American" ones. The truth still remains that in using Linux and/or the GNU userland (no one seems to have been able to pound into you yet that these are, in fact, seperate; Linux is not a part of the GNU project despite the fact that it uses GPL v.2; moreover, you can get versions of these utilites that were not provided by FSF; I've seen a lot of rewrites and you could always pick a shell other than bash) you are not providing any revenue to Stallman. How is that supporting his cause?

His license allows the free transfer of technology

Which is different from Microsoft and Apple only in that it doesn't charge. Are you saying that it is OK then to give technology to Communist governments so long as we charge for it? Solaris gives its technology out in something called Open Solaris. That's OK?

Your endless denials are merely your youthful uninformed opinion,

LOL.

based on emotion

It seems that I am evaluating the software on its merits and that your opinion is the one based on emotion. There isn't even a consistent line of reasoning to your opinion.

in my opinion.

Which matters...because?

There are plenty of available software choices without selling yourself out to that from leftists like Stallman, much less arguing endlessly in defense of his works.

How is using software that is given away for free "selling out"? Don't I have to give something to the FSF to sell out to them?

Like Ivan the Terrible Groznii here you have some foreign username,

I am an American citizen born on American soil, with ancestors who are primarily German and Irish (with some other European countries thrown into the mix). The user name was picked because I really like the fictional character Zorro created by Johnston McCulley.

I must be doing well if you're picking on my screen name. I was wondering how long it would be before you'd do that to me, just like you did to Flaming Death (courtesy ping).

Stallman is a quote "virulent leftist", your words not mine.

Words I have never backpedalled from. What's your point?

I'm just not going to agree with your liberal viewpoint of giving things away to foreign governments for free.

If someone else wants to give their work away, what is that to you? IP works two ways, you know.

Go bug someone else with your silly questions over and over and over, if you just don't understand why.

You mean like the ones that show your position to be completely irrational and without basis?
