A Muslim student has been prevented from getting on a bus because she would not remove her veil.
The 22-year-old woman, who does not want to be identified, said yesterday that other passengers laughed when the driver refused to let her board.
He said he took the action because without her lifting her veil he could not check her features against those on her bus pass.
The student, who is studying at Manchester University, had been trying to board a No 59 bus in Oldham, Greater Manchester. She said the driver initially asked to see her pass. Having glanced at it, he then asked her to lift her veil so he could see her face.
"I told him I would not remove my veil and he said I couldn't get on."
She added: "The veil is my choice and my religious duty." The student is now offering to help the driver's employers, First Manchester, draw up guidelines for staff.
A First Manchester spokesman said: "We have investigated this incident thoroughly but found no complaint on our system."

Ping!
"She added: "The veil is my choice and my religious duty."
Sounds like it's also part of you duty to walk home.
Maybe she should become AMISH! They walk rather than ride.
How ridiculous! What did her bus pass photo look like? Did she have her full veil on in it?
Good for the driver! How could he tell she hadn't stolen the pass from someone else, if he couldn't check her face? How could he tell it wasn't a man, hiding a weapon or bomb under the robes, if she wouldn't reveal her face?
For the safety of the passengers, and to prevent theft, the face must be revealed. Otherwise, she walks.
PS, if she doesn't like the laws and rules in the UK, let her go somewhere else more to her liking.
Bus driver: "But couldn't I just take a teeny, weeny peek? Just for a mo'?"
Lady in the veil: "Most certainly not, sir, it is my religious duty to not show my face!"
Bus driver: "Get your arse off the bus!"
Later, much later, his boss says: "You should have said 'please'! You must be more polite!"
Your DUTY, dear heart, is/was/always will be to assimilate yourself into the culture of the beleaguered host nation you parasitically infest.
Your CHOICE, however, was (instead) to swear blind allegiance, for whatever reason, to a reactionary and bloodcurdlingly violent hate group attempting to pass itself off as being a "religion of peace."
Your DUTY, therefore -- as a woman; as a human being; and as a (putatively) sentient creature -- is to deal with the logical CONSEQUENCES of said CHOICE.
Don't wanna? Go find yourself a nice, accommodating caliphate someplace, then.

That would appear to be a contradictory statement.
I don't give a monkey's if people laughed. Sooner or later they'll do much more than that.
I'm with you. There's a black muslim who sometimes rides my bus. She's covered from head to toe, with just a small opening for her eyes. She also wears black gloves. It is beyond creepy to see her on the bus. I hope we don't have suicide bombings here, but if they ever started, no one dressed like this could or should be able to ride the bus. They can take their religion and walk.
The thing that gets me is that there are other muslim girls who take the bus and they wear regular clothes with long sleeves and long skirts or pants and a scarf. You can see their faces and see what they're up to. My understanding is that the full veil thing is not a muslim requirement, so no government should cave to these people who claim they have to wear the veil.
That's rich - "The veil is my choice and my religious duty." So why doesn't she just go back to her Muslim country where her "religious duty" is de rigueur rather than inflict the silly custom (religion has nothing to do with it) on others.
Why does that make me think of the Gasparilla Festival? Maybe the driver should have a supply of beads. ARRRgggh!
That's rich, 'helping' draw up guidelines...IOW, another Muslim trying to push their ideas on non-Muslims.
I am so freaking sick and tired of these animals trying to push their death-cult religion on the rest of us.
My understanding based on some readings and talking to some Muslims, is that a scarf or a veil isn't required at all.
A more conservative clothing was decreed back in the 7th Century in Arabia, after the advent of Mohammad/Islam, because of Bedouin Arabs sexual looseness (especially the males). Rape was rather common in Arabia and women were treated less than animals. Actually, many Bedouin Arabs used to bury their female infants alive. Mainly, because they saw little use for the females in terms of ability to do hard work or fight.
Burka, veil and chador are more recent inventions by Muslim clerics (all men of course) by using a religion as justification. Of course, rape and sexual/physical abuse are still quite common in Muslim countries (with or without hijab) and women are still treat extremely badly.
In many ways, when the Bedouin Muslim Arabs exported their religion by the sword, lies and intimidations, they also exported their own so-called Arab culture & mentality along with it.
I live in a muslim country and was told that the veil is NOT a religious requirement.
Many women have tatoos on their face denoting their tribes/family; the veil is a cover not to show their ancestry, just in case a woman is from a poorer tribe/family than others.
Redirect your anger to the place it belongs.
It is the liberal, one worlder, cultural diversity is wonderful, multi-cultural idiots who allow this crap to go on who and are to blame.
These people can not impose their foolish notions on use with out our permission.
We allow this to happen. It is up to us to stop it.
