Laura Bush draws cheers in Pleasanton

First lady Laura Bush campaigned for Rep. Richard Pombo in Pleasanton this morning, praising his character and record on conservation as he seeks re-election in one of the nation's most closely watched congressional races.

Some 500 cheering and screaming supporters greeted her at a film studio on Coronado Lane owned by former Raiders coach John Madden. Security was tight and protesters gathered outside.

Attired in a gray dress suit, Bush shared the stage with Pombo, R-Tracy, and his wife Annette.

Voters on Tuesday will decide between incumbent Pombo, R-Tracy, who has held office for 13 years, and Democratic challenger Jerry McNerny.

McNerny has never held elective office, and was once thought to be nearly unelectable. Polls now show McNerny and Pombo in a tight race for the District 11 seat, which encompasses most of San Joaquin County, and includes a swatch stretching from Danville to Morgan Hill.

LOL I do the same thing all the time -- scan and slip vegetables into the sentence. (Seriously, although it isn't always veggies that pop up when I scan.)
