Total of 115,000 as of right now, with 2,000 more expected to be added when the polls close in the next 2 hours.

I just talked to my mom. She is in line at the Meadows Place City Hall and says the line is long and everyone around her is for Gibbs. There have been Gibbs poll workers there all week to explain how to vote for her.

If I was still living in that district...and wasn't sure of the spelling...I'd write in S S-Gibbs...easy enough. No one would think my intent was anything other than Shelley Sekula-Gibbs.

A question was ask by a reporter to a republican after Bushes visit on Oct 30th...if the write in would be a problem...he said OH COME ON WE'RE REPUBLICANS...we know what we're doing. ;o)

As a fellow "Texan By Choice" I appreciate the humorous optimism, but I'm enraged at the brazenly partisan tactics which are being employed in this election and others throughout the nation to intimidate, sabotage and discourage American citizens who simply want to exercise their right to vote. In this case, spelling the last name, G.I.B.B.S. should be more than sufficient, and there should have already been announcements to the public so stating.

As a matter of larger concern, it's way past time to start prosecuting and jailing some of these corrupt "election officials".

Seems to me there could be a lot of folks in the polls asking out loud "How do you spell SEKULKA?"

ME TOO. When I really start talking about it as I did to my brother the other day. I could feel my blood pressure rising. Mostly, except here at FR...I really have to stay away from it.

I voted there last Saturday. The line was not long, but everybody appeared to be spelling out somebody's name...

A straight ticket will NOT count as a vote for any Republican candidate.

What I'm worried about is that voters have to vote for her TWICE - once for a special election to replace Delay - for that brief period of time before the next swearing in of the new reps - and again by writing in. It helps that her name will be on the ballot for the special election, but I really think some people will forget to write her in the second time.

Probably not, since it isn't "sekulka," it's "sekula." However, her full name is on a white sheet of paper and quite legible, placed directly in front of the voter in EVERY voting booth. It identifies her as one of the qualified a write-in candidates, and that is a VERY easy reference.

"Texas law says only that “A vote on an office or measure shall be counted if the voter’s intent is clearly ascertainable…” What that will mean in practice is not entirely clear."

Actually, it is entirely clear to nearly everyone except the National Review - the local election commission (I forget their title) has already met and decided that a variety of spellings will be accepted, including (but not limited to) such things as "Shelley" (or Shelly);
"Shelley Gibbs"
"Shelley Sekula"<"Mrs. Gibbs"
etc.

The question we SHOULD be asking is, "Do we really want her?" and "Isn't there someone better?"

No, that is not the question to be asking now.

The question to be asking now is do you want a Democrat to take the seat.

We have to play with the hand we were dealt.

She has stated a very conservative platform.

There is a very heavy turnout for Gibbs.

The write in is not difficult.

Her name is on a sheet of paper in the ballot booth.

Moreover, intent will be easy to discern if you vote for her on the special election, it is clear you are writing her in as well.

All Lampson can do now is send out literature to claim she is too liberal and the other write in candidate is too conserative, hoping to get us to split the GOP votes.

The early voting indicates a strong, motivated vote for Gibbs, who are willing to take a little extra time to vote and get the right person elected.

Couldn't they make it a little more difficult. What's the average age in this district? This method could present a slight problem for older voters.

This is Texas, not Florida! Our old folk will have no problems using the machine to cast their votes!
