"Principled politician" is an oxymoron. While one could - for oneself - be as principled as one wants, to be a principled politician requires having absolute power - i.e. having no need to take anyone else into account and compromise with them. But an absolute ruler is not a politician [unless in foreign relations], for the definition of political relationship is one between independent actors.
