Looks to me Lieberman is just trying to position himself for a win. He can't very well show his cards at this point in the game.

Yep. In his position he may have quite a long list of people he's pissed at but he needs to get reelected for another 6 year term first.
I've heard some stories (from Liz, I think) of how he was pretty duplicitous to get elected in the first place so who knows what he may be thinking.
