TAMPA, Fla. - Katherine Harris has insisted all along that she could unseat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson if she could energize the state's strong Republican base. She'll learn Tuesday night how successful that effort has been.
Voters heading to the polls Tuesday had a clear choice between Harris, the conservative congresswoman who made her name overseeing Florida's recount in the disputed 2000 election, and Nelson, the staid, centrist Democratic senator who's been spent more than three decades in public office.
Harris had her work cut out for her. Nelson has led the Longboat Key congresswoman by as much as 30 percentage points in recent polls, and political experts doubt she was able to close the gap in the waning days of the campaign, despite reasonably solid performances in two debates.
Lack of money has kept her from running statewide TV ads since the September primary, in which she beat three political newcomers. She has focused her campaign efforts on Republican groups and public events, but wasn't allowed to sit on stage Monday as President Bush spoke at a Pensacola campaign rally.

They also said Crist showed up on stage later in the day with McCain.
"Crist's people had said late last week that he would not be there for the rally"....well, obviously they didn't let Karl Rove in on it. He was on TV, at the AIRPORT, and he was visibly P.O.d. When he heard their explanation he said "well, we'll see how many people he has show up on 24 hour notice vs 8,000 to 9,000 who will be HERE today to hear the President speak! I am SURE he didn't know Crist was NOT going to be there! I voted for Crist (not in the Primary), but I DON'T like the guy!! This just made me more confident that I pegged him right!
It's not about where you sit, it's about where you stand on the issues.
Vote Katherine Harris!
Katherine Harris must have done something to really PO the Bush brothers. I voted for her several days ago by absentee ballot. Her conservative outlook is practically identical to my own. The Republican Party is too liberal, and that's why I'm switching to Independent.
We need a new party, the Reagan Party.
Through this entire election season, Katherine Harris has never spoken a negative word about the party that threw her under the train.
"I voted for her!"
I did too, and I agree with you, it is SHAMEFUL that the Republicans have treated her this way. I heard this morning that she hasn't had advertising because of lack of money. Why didn't the Republican Committee fork over some of those dollars I've been sending to them for years??
I've talked to my friends and relatives. Anecdotely, regarding Harris, the press in FL has really gotten to the moms. My mother, a dem voting for several Republicans and my niece, who is a Republican and about 24 years old are both voting for Nelson----simply because they "don't like" Harris. I thanked them both for helping to make Pelosi third in line to the Presidency.
I heard she's planning a "tell all" book. Not sure if that's true.
The only thing I can think of is they wanted her to stay where she was and keep a Republican seat in the House. I haven't heard if her old seat is going Republican or Democrat.
"They may be slightly biased since three different times the refferred to Crist as "the soon to be gay governor of Florida although he denies it."
I hadn't heard this, but I did hear Jeb blast a reporter when he asked Crist if he was gay.
As promised, I voted for her.
As promised, I voted for her.
As promised, I voted for her.
As promised, I voted for her.
As promised, I voted for her.
As promised, I voted for her.
Six times?
WOW, A RARE SIX!!! CAN SHE SPEAK?
LOL! The 'Rats are going to have a field day with this info.
