Vote machines crash in Ohio
Early trouble with crashing electronic voting machines sparked immediate problems in some areas as US elections again went ahead amid fears of delays and polling irregularities.
In one elementary school in the predominantly black district of East Cleveland, Ohio, all 12 machines went down when voting opened at 6:30 am (1130 GMT), according to an AFP correspondent at the scene.
The machines were not started up until two hours later and poll officials refused to hand out paper ballots until a lawyer for the watchdog group Election Protection showed up.
"The machines weren't working and they were just turning people away," said the attorney, Fred Livingstone. "They are not allowed to do that."
More than 250 problems were reported at polling places in Ohio soon after polls opened according to an Election Protection watchdog operation run by a minority rights group and other non-governmental organizations.
Ohio was the epicenter of controversy during the 2004 elections, as Democrats charged voter fraud incidents disproportionately helped Republicans.
Democrats Tuesday hoped a strong countrywide showing would help them break the Republican hold on Congress and punish President George W. Bush over the war in Iraq.
In one polling station in Friendship Heights, Maryland just outside Washington, one of the 16 voting machines on offer failed as soon as the polls opened.

I don't understand why these things break down? Are they not tested beforehand?I suppose every other district has some liberal kid punk who downloaded the Diebold sources from the internet and tried to upload their own “improved” firmware…
If only those potheads weren't so crappy coders ;-)
"Machines may have failed in all white districts, but we're not going to report that."
They will blame Bush and Cheney.
Stupid libs did it themselves.
My election experience today is the reason. We use optically scanned paper ballots in my precinct, and on slow "school millage only" elections, they can set up 3 or 4 plastic tables and one optical scanner.
Today, with it's very heavy turnout, they set up 40 plastic tables to vote at, but was still served by the single optical scanner.
You can't scale up touch screen machines like that, or if you try you spend millions and end up with the majority of them sitting in storage for four years, expecting them to still work when you next "fire them up."
It's a freakin' FRENCH news report!!!
We could put an end to all of this nonsense by implementing paper ballots nationwide.
Obviously you don't understand the omnipotent power of Karl the Magnificent. Remember, remember the 7th of Rovember. ;o)
I just voted on a new machine today. Went swimmingly.
What they are accusing the machines of doing..."flip the vote" as they submit it, would be impossible to view. The 5 pages don't show again unless you review.
But then again, I don't vote in a "predominantly black" district.
Absolutely...manufacturing doubt in the process to be used later as needed.
And we know libs can't figure out anything more difficult than a Mac.
Before I even read the article, I thought "Cleveland".
Just like the four heavily Democratic Florida counties where Gore wanted a recount in 2000. All run by Democrats.
Oh, the voternamity!
I would not doubt it for one second if the network was sabatoged by liberals.
Not for one second.
They weren't working at my precinct in Utah either. Not a single one was operational.
God bless Rove, Melhman and everyone at the RNC.
He must have added a little EMP to the mix.
And I bet the MSM will say it's Blackwell's fault.
