Vote machines crash in Ohio
Early trouble with crashing electronic voting machines sparked immediate problems in some areas as US elections again went ahead amid fears of delays and polling irregularities.
In one elementary school in the predominantly black district of East Cleveland, Ohio, all 12 machines went down when voting opened at 6:30 am (1130 GMT), according to an AFP correspondent at the scene.
The machines were not started up until two hours later and poll officials refused to hand out paper ballots until a lawyer for the watchdog group Election Protection showed up.
"The machines weren't working and they were just turning people away," said the attorney, Fred Livingstone. "They are not allowed to do that."
More than 250 problems were reported at polling places in Ohio soon after polls opened according to an Election Protection watchdog operation run by a minority rights group and other non-governmental organizations.
Ohio was the epicenter of controversy during the 2004 elections, as Democrats charged voter fraud incidents disproportionately helped Republicans.
Democrats Tuesday hoped a strong countrywide showing would help them break the Republican hold on Congress and punish President George W. Bush over the war in Iraq.
In one polling station in Friendship Heights, Maryland just outside Washington, one of the 16 voting machines on offer failed as soon as the polls opened.

Here we go again...
Raise your hand if you think the libs do this intentionally so that they can scream "voter supression" tonight?
Were those electronic machines or mechanical?
In Alexandria, VA, the electronic machine I used was a breeze. Much to my surprise.
PAPER BALLOTS!!! Just remember which party want electronic voting after the 2000 election "fiasco" that didn't go their way.
Dimpled chads started this madness. They said electronic was the way to go! DAMIT! We should have kept the paper ballots.
Black voters are still predominately liberals. Why is a different question.
It would not serve their purposes to scream FRAUD in a Republican district...everyone would look at the libs, right?
They would think nothing of denying their own the right to vote to create an atmosphere of fraud.

Ohio's problem polling places try to get it right in '06

CLEVELAND (AP) -- A polling place in Cleveland that opened six hours late in May is up and running today.
The Garden Valley Neighborhood House was the epicenter of a disastrous primary for the state's most populous county. All but one poll worker didn't show up, voting machines didn't immediately work and several voters were turned away.
Today, hot cocoa, steaming coffee and pastries greeting voters who were able to cast ballots on the touch-screen machines at about ten minutes after polls were scheduled to open.
The Cuyahoga County elections board has spent the last five months giving poll workers extra training and fixing several of the primary problems.

We had a choice of electronic OR paper in my district.
At least their Macs work...:)
Slet me put it this way.
If Dems were confident of a win, these stories wouldn't exist. Take that as you will.
I'm sorry, but intentionally fixing the machines to turn away people who would vote for them, just so they can later claim voter fraud, sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory. Especially if the race is close.
geez we can put a man on the moon.............
They are the new very safe and secure, foolproof, mindboggling, amazing, easy squeezy, magnificent, so much better the chaddy paper, electronic, digital, press the button, non hackable crackable breakable, new fangled, everybody does it, doohickeys provided by the impeachable, clean, honest, iron clad secure, behind the curtain, where did that money come from, company named Diabold.
"Libs-i guarantee you 1000% that they purposely caused this to happen."Your probably correct. They're probably preping to contest the results if they lose.
Not QUITE as bad...but close.
"Were they plugged in?"
Were they logged in?
Yet that is exactly what this "News" report is doing.
Are you getting the idea that the integrity of this election is going to be somewhat doubtful? Its a sham ...er I mean shame.
Remind me again why the existing machines that had functioned mostly flawlessly for years had to be replaced?
