Lancet Out of the Blue (Guess which issue?-Vanity)

Posted on 11/07/2006 10:00:41 AM PST by gusopol3

Physicians receive "throw away " journals in the mail, usually advertising vehicles with modest original content of research, if any. They are not commonly the premier journals, such as New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Medicine, or even Lancet which is based in Great Britain, but published for distribution in US by Elsevier. Recently, Lancet published the highly suspect paper out of Johns Hopkins by Roberts claiming 665,000 Iraqi deaths in the war. The skulduggery of the rush to pre-election publication, the questionable science, and the political activities of several of the principals have been the subjects of other FR threads. Guess what arrived in the mail a week ago to a non-subscriber physician? A complimentary copy of Lancet containing the original article, complete with an advertising cover from Cephalon Pharmaceuticals. No such copy of this week's edition arrived. So it looks like a Lancet out of the blue, with content that several entities really wanted to be sure had the widest possible pre-election distribution. Did any FReeper MD's receive the same attention as in a mass mailing? This looks like a corporate donation in kind to the Democratic Party to me, with a lot of behind the scenes string-pulling to get it out. Soros' fingerprints?

Cephalon makes what drugs? The ones the Democrats and media are on? Are they legal drugs?

the product is Provigil for narcolepsy, a great med, actually, but the question to me is the financial trail for putting out a very expensive mass mailing, if it went to a large number of physicians.

Was the issue sponsored by Cephalon or was it promotion for the Lancet?

Have you contacted Cephalon and asked them about this?

There were no articles about Provigil in the issue, which I'm sure would have been a conflict of interest. Of course, it was advertising. No , I didn't contact Cephalon.

I have not received this, but, indeed, the Lancet is a communist publication and would support such dubious publications, as would the commie JH faculty.

Actually, all of the medical press can be considered sort of a technical phalanx of the MSM.

All have as a given that abortion is OK until term.

They all go lock stock and barrel for the gay agenda.

They are ALWAYS for a single-payer, i.e., socialized, medicine, even now when market forces and patent laws are causing prices to fall, as in the case of Wal-Mart's $4.00 generics.

They tow the liberal party line, even if it contradicts sound microbiological principles and practice (which support abstinence, not leaky, porous (for the HIV virus) and bursting rubbers). Even if it supports quarantine of HIV patients (don't worry, that opportunity was long ago lost by the feckless Pinko C. Everett Koop, who is responsible for the current AIDS epidemic.

Oh, yeah, don't forget how the Journal of the American Medical Association published that bogus paper that asserted that teenage girls do not consider oral sex sex... exactly when Clinton was being raked over the coals for Monica Lewinski...

Of course they knew it was wrong to publish the paper. The editor of the JAMA was canned for doing it.

I think I've heard of this drug. It allows people to stay up for several days and nights in a row without sleepiness. There was an FR thread about it a year or two ago IIRC.

I agree; lots of hypocrisy from the ivory tower. Can't live without them, but they have to be held accountable.

Lancet...... most of medicine that is published in journals is mixed in with political indoctrination.

AMA and ACEP are two of the organizations that I've told to KMA. Especially JAMA when they advocated government controlled single payer health care. Those that can't do ....teach and publish. and mentally wh@ck off about patient care.

True, an "in kind" contribution for considerable value.

Provigil for narcolepsy

There's an antidote for an Al Gore speech/movie? How wonderful.

Walked away last week and they were $2.00.

I wish the prescription benefit had not been enacted.

There were that year so many drugs ready to go off patent, and really good, cutting edge drugs, that you could manage almost everybody with an ensemble of generics, or one could foresee doing so really soon.

$2.00 drugs... amazing.

Let's hope people get a taste of what the free market can do to medical costs and they will give up on single-payer forever.

Everybody except the commies in the journals.

Regards, caddie

sorry I didn't reply sooner. The ref. to the Kansas Medical Association puzzled me for a few hours there. The editorial policy of NEJM is by the lawyers for the lawyers down the line.
