Washington -- If women face a "glass ceiling'' preventing success in business or politics, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco has had to deal with what she and other women call a "marble ceiling'' in the august, historic halls of Congress.
But if predictions are right and Democrats make a net gain of at least 15 House seats in midterm elections today, House Minority Leader Pelosi will smash through that ceiling by being elected the first woman speaker of the House early next January. For women, that would mean another barrier broken and yet another entree into the inner circles of American power.
Pelosi's ascension would leave only two major mountains to climb for women in politics -- election as vice president and president.
"It would, I think, send a message that anything is possible. If you can break the marble ceiling in the Capitol of the United States, most anything is possible, in any profession and personally as well,'' Pelosi told The Chronicle recently.
"I'm just excited that it would be a Democratic speaker, but the fact that it would be a woman is also pretty exciting to me,'' she said.
Analysts agree that a Pelosi speakership in the 110th Congress -- and if Democrats don't win today, Pelosi could find her leadership of the party in jeopardy -- would set an example for women interested in entering politics and public service.
"There is a role-model effect,'' said Barbara Palmer of the Women & Politics Institute at American University in Washington. "When you see someone who looks like you in a position of power, you think, 'I can do it too.' ''

Was there also an annunciation?--a visitation of Angels announcing the arrival of Pelosi? Or an annointing? I'm waiting for her transfiguration. That ought to be interesting. Or when she turns the blood and sweat of taxpayers into the pure wine of patronage for public employee unions and other constituencies.
