Rome, 8 Nov. (AKI) - Italian foreign minister Massimo D'Alema called on Wednesday for an international initiative to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Speaking shortly after an Israeli tank attack killed at least 18 Palestinians in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun, D'Alema said "at this time there is talk of a new Palestinian government to end the rise in violence and we hope the Israeli government will act in this direction."
"The Israeli defence minister Amir Peretz announced an end to military operations in Gaza after this morning's massacre," D'Alema told reporters at the foreign ministry in Rome. "Foreign minister Tzipi Livni expressed regret while other government sources announced that the operations would continue," he concluded, calling for an end to military intervention.
Israel's foreign minister Tzipi Livni expressed regret for the IDF attack in Beit Hanoun and said that "Israel has no intention of hurting innocents, only to act in defense of its citizens."
"Unfortunately, during combat, sometimes sad incidents occur, such as did this morning," she added.
Israeli defence minister Amir Peretz also announced Israel would halt artillery fire at Gaza until the end of an investigation into the incident.
However, an Israeli government spokeswoman, Miri Eisin, also said that Israel would continue with a week-long offensive in northern Gaza aimed at stopping Palestinian rocket attacks.
"The Israeli operation throughout the Gaza Strip will continue as long as Qassam rockets land in Israel, as long as the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip continues, as long as the Hamas government chooses for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to continuously provoke Israel."
Palestinian leaders have called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting in a bid to oblige Israel to halt its military offensive.
Ping.
Tell it to the muzzies.
I hate to tell the foreign minister, but it's been tried before and it didn't work then. It won't happen now.
Our new overlords will love the idea though. Don't the words "international initiative" just make feeeeeel so warm and fuzzy? ;-)
Theirs will be the only initiatives that could work. Kill all the infidels and put the survivors into slavery.
Peace on earth. Yay...
Yeah, that's never been tried before. /sarc Here is the agreed upon statement that will come as a result: "Quindi è risolto, l'Israele cesserà di esistere."
Without the Republican House of Representatives staunchly defending Israel with funding and verbal support, I'd say Israelis must be as nervous as Iraqis today. And with good reason.
Violence is the language of islam. It won't stop until islam is either dead or silenced.
gee, I expect some on this forum to blame Bush...since he's being blamed for everything else....
And,fortunately,Israel's hand can reach all the way to Tehran so that now she will not have to nuke Iran as the mullahs approach their goal of nuclear weapons.
Bravissimo,Roma! We'll now have....peace in our time!
Of course you are dealing with a people steeped in a culture of death who laugh at your foolishness and will smile and shake your hand right up the point that they judge their knife sharp enough.

It's better to blame him than to blame our fellow Europeans of superior genes. ...correct? [g]
Maybe our President should whack the Iranian oil rigs first. That way, Italy won't have the gas to get to Jerusalem.
It just occured to me that with the ascension of the demonrats, perhaps we really ought to support "cut and run" now instead of leaving our troops over there to get butchered due to the policies of appeasment certain to follow and fail.
It is not our troops fault, they are magnificent, and that is precisely why they should be removed from harm's way since they won't be permitted to fight.
I'd rather lose 10,000 foreigners than one US soldier.
The Middle East does not need "an end to the rising violence." It needs peace. But the Palestinians don't want peace badly enough to sacrifice anything for it.
