Santorum and Hayworth each are dealing with their own unique districts, but in general, the problem is that the party as a whole delivered little in the past two years. Yes, those of us paying attention are happy because the WOT is on course and progress is made in Iraq, but for the typical voter that doesn't pay attention, there was nothing accomplished in the past two years but high gas prices, death in Iraq, and republican scandals. There was a clear national belief that the GOP are not doing much with their power, and it was time to try something new.
There was no clear plan for this election cycle by the GOP other than recycled 2004 issues....and 'we are better than the other guy'.

Ha - you and I obviously disagree on what amnesty means for the country. But I can almost guarantee you that people are *not* angry that we *didn't* pass an amnesty.

I'm afraid that will happen sooner or later. Then we'll have a short term unification of will of the populace to do something about it. Maybe for a few months, then back to apathy.
I'm glad I'm old.

So, buy your statement (and Rush's saying that yes, conservatism doesn't win all the time and that there are special circumstances, etc.), would a more moderate Republican have won? And if so, how is that an advancement of conservatism?

The movie "Flags Of Our fathers" is partly about this exact same issue... motivating the people.

Santorum lost in 2004 when he supported Specter over whomever was Specter's primary opponent. Hayworth was arrogant.
To: 2ndDivisionVet
I think he's right, especially on the sleaze.
Abramoff, Ney, DeLay, Cunningham, to say nothing
of the pedophile Foley.
Thank these guys for letting the GOP down.

Sorry, but the toe-sucker is right. Washington DC turns even the most idealistic politician into a cynical opportunist over time.
Thay is because by definition politicians are power hungry HACKs
We need statesmen
WE need term limits
One of anything then out

You think this election is going to calvanize the GOP leadership
It will further wimpify them
Country has had it
I see NO Leaders anywhere worth a damn

The lobbyist travel scandals, the Foley affair and earmarking of funds for every last piece of pork in their districts cost the Republicans their virtue and their House majority.
So the voters for for the BIGGER part of corruption

the key question is whether the Republican leaders will shed their arrogance and understand that they need to listen to the American people.
Regardless of what anyone thinks of Morris, he's right about this.

The good news is, people now get to see the Dems in action. If they blow it, and this country is seriously attacked, they will be done as a party for generations.
NOPE
MSM will cover for them and blame it on past GOP mistakes
No win wars that are alowed to drag on will get you every time ''Truman--LBJ "

People in Arizona have been bellyaching about illegals for many, many years. Once the WOT was declared it was clear that the border needed to be closed. That was in 2001.
It was only about five months ago that conservative repubs recognized that the open borders were a big issue with their constituents. By that time certain politicians had already been declared dead by a large number of voters, who went on to look at other big issues. And when they looked, many saw no overwhelming reason to change their mind when the House finally came up with a plan with some teeth. It was too late with so many other irons in the fire.
I just heard from Hayworth,on the radio, that there are still at least 100.000 votes to be counted in Arizona. So things may change.
Hayworth was actually hurt badly when his name was connected to Jack Abramoff, that in combination with the belated immigration position, admixed with his confident affect which is oft confused with "cockiness" (also an attribute that hurts Bush) all combined to hurt Hayworth badly. There were also a couple of other items that were problematic but I won't go into them now.
Arizona passed all four propositions that took a tough stand against illegals,so those losses had more to do with other things than most Freepers realize.

Yaeh it was due to the MSM constant pounding everythnig the GOP did or didn't due
American public is dumbed down and brainwashed by the MSM Period
Economy is booming and public thinks times are hard
As far as wars go this one is almost a sideshow affecting the average American in no way ( except for the militray families )and they think it is some kind of Nintendo game

Morris has been predicting the loss of the House for months...
I can't say I admire the guy or his chameleon political nature, but he is one of the best political analysts out there, IMHO.
To: Tanniker Smith
You are so right on the immigration issue---too little, too late. Here on the front lines we knew years ago that something needed to be done, but oh-no. People figured that the dems were pandering for votes of the illegals and the repubs were pandering to certain businesses desire for cheap labor. The citizens were mad but had to move on,and they did.
Basically the immigration issue was dead but if it lived, each party canceled out the other parties voters.

Dick Morris is (still) a toe sucking POS! Nothing new here as far as I'm concerned.

the truth hurts.
in addition, Republicans had lots of baggage...
oil company price gouging, in the summer
twit candidates
perceived lack of movement in Iraq
Bush-and-Cheney fatigue
I'd really like President Bush to level with the
American people on the 'weapons of mass destruction' claim.
