There is no need for introspection. There is no need for philosophical questioning.

Nothing at all needs to change. The country voted conservative in 2004 and it did so again yesterday -- because a conservative country will not tolerate corruption scandals and the GOP had a ton of them last year.

Clean up the candidates, change position of the party not one iota, and all those Democrats who are temporarily renting GOP seats will have to give them back.

Sounds just like Poloski started this thread, and alot folks agreeing, This is the same stuff the Dem leadership was saying about the Republicans before the elections.

There are probably as many opinions about why the Republicans lost as there are Freepers. I don't intend to add mine.

Instead, I intend to address the question, what do we do next? It's all well and good to say we need new leadership. What are WE going to do to get it? Just wishing for it won't bring it into existence.

In many states, next year there will be elections for Party offices (precinct committeeman, etc.) These are the people who ultimately find, encourage, and work to elect candidates in the primaries. Do you know who is your precinct committeeman? Do you know what his/her views are? If the post is vacant, or you don't like their politics, are you going to run for that post? If not, don't whine when the Party nominates another RINO. If yes, now is the time to start. Find out from your election board whether the post is vacant. If it's vacant, ask the County Chairman to appoint you to fill the vacancy until the next election. If it's already filled and they've never contacted you, it's a pretty safe bet they're not doing their job and shoulld be replaced. In either case, start now to prepare for the next election of Party officials. Find out from your election board when you have to file a petition, and how many signatures you need. Get started collecting signatures as soon as petitions are printed. Talk to Party members in your precinct (the election board will sell you a list) and ask for their vote.

Once on the Central Committee, work to find and fund conservative candidates for all offices. Very few people run for US Senator, say, without first holding some lesser office, like state senator. You want to start filling those local and state offices with conservatives who have the potential to move up later.

While working to grow a new generation of conservative office holders, look around to find suitable conservatives among current office holders. If there aren't any in your district, look elsewhere. In either case, you will need to make contact with like-minded Party officials to encourage those conservative office-holders to look higher. (The conservative who just won the election to US House of Representatives in my district started off running for the state house years ago, then when term limited out, got elected to state senate. I think he'll be ready for US Senate in another 6 or 8 years.)

Don't wait until late 2007 to start working on 2008. Start now to find candidates you can support whole-heartedly.

After you've been on the Central Committee for a couple of terms, it's time to start thinking about becoming Party Chairman in your county. Why? Because then you have influence over who is selected to be State Party Chairman. By that time you can really have an influence on who will be the candidates, who will get support from the Party, and how Party funds are distributed to candidates.

Again I say, get started now, or don't whine later.

You know...there are a lot of us ticked off about the "K Street lobbyists" situation. Don't down-play it. I know it enfuriated me...and it enfuriated a lot of others. Trivialize it if you will...and if the GOP party leaders trvialize it...they can guarantee they will not be the majority party any time soon because they will not have learned their lesson.

If you listen to BUsh and others in teh GOP leadersip today...they are hinting that they understand that they need to clean up the "K Street lobbyists" and the corruption it led to. The question is will they.

Vigurie is exactly right.

"You're fired!" That's exactly what we have said.

Now get some conservative in those offices, and start doing conservative things.

I sincerely hope republicans learn the lesson in '06, so we don't have to teach it again in '08.

"ONE" of the biggest mistake Reagan made was to make Bush {1} his VP?

No!

It was his Biggest Mistake!

And conservatives said so in '92, but voting for Perot. I'm proud of that vote.

I'm also proud of staying home yesterday. Now let's just hope republicans learn the lesson and don't do something really stupid, like nominating McCain.

Who IS this "preacher haggard" people are talking about? do they mean Jimmy Swaggart?

If they do, it's an apt analogy. Swaggart slipped on his commitment to the cause, and was FIRED!

That's what just happened to the republicans. Will they learn the lesson?

That's the question.

So far i haven't seen a clue that they have.

Yes...we needed them long ago. It could even be for 7 terms and not be a lifetime ban and not be retroactive (to help passage) - that would still create more turnover than what we have now. Alas, since they would have to pass something like that themselves...won't happen.

The Viguerie model of power-brokering via drawing money from relatively naive, uninvolved conservatives is passe and it never did work.

Boehner should be the next to go. New leadership is a must. Bush is a lame duck--let us never mention another Bush as a possible presidential candidate. In the end, they always screw the Conservatives.

Yeah, the saying: "throwing the baby out with the bath water" comes to mind...

Actually, the baby's already gone. We're throwing out the bathwater.

"One thing this election was not is a repudiation of conservatism. The twin pillars of conservatism — smaller government and traditional values — have the support of the same voters who threw out the Republican Congress.”

Just because you say it doesn't make it true. I see support for traditional values in yestedays voting: the passage of traditional marraige acts, anti-affirmative action bill and some property rights measures. I also see support for liberal values: the defeat of anti-abortion and parental notification bills, the support for stem cell research and more anti-smoking bills.

As for smaller government - does anyone really believe it's possible. SIX YEARS! Nothing cut, nothing trimmed. But lots of new agencies. I don't see a large political constituency supporting this.

Everyone thinks someone else's pork should be cut. A real "small government conservative" would set ou to end Social Security and Medicare. Instead we are told by everyone in both parties that those are "sacred".

I don't believe the authors assertions stand up to scruitiny.

The question is who will fill his shoes?

I think *he* did. But not with feet.

The disloyalty of the republican base is stunning. This is why we aren't holding power anymore, because every single splinter group out there is claiming they were dissed and that's why we lost.

News Flash! Both RINOS and died in the wool conservatives were thrown out. If the people blamed Bush for Iraq it's because they don't have what it takes to make it thorough a long hard fight. If they have so little faith, if they don't have the stomach for a fight, then put the dems in power and get it over with faster.

I'm not sure it had much to do with Iraq. The President has had approval numbers consistently about 20 points higher than the Republicans in Congress for over a year. I think folks were just angry with those Congressmen and women who were spending too much, and not listening to their constituents.

MORE!

I stayed home in a congressional election because i was unhappy with CONGRESSIONAL republicans. I wanted the to give MORE Support to the President, and cooperated with the enemy less.

They had/HAVE become fat and lazy, they have become {NOT PART} the System, and they have been doing absolutely NOTHING to advance the conservative cause.

It was long past time to term limit them out.
