Violence against women [Pakistani perspective]
The Dawn (Pakistan) ^ | November 8, 2006 | Editorial

THE recent chopping off of the hands near Khanpur in Punjab of two sisters married to two brothers comes as the latest act of savage violence against women. The brutal ‘punishment’ was meted out to the sisters because they had gone to visit their parents without the husbands’ permission. On Friday last, another man in Sindh’s Khairpur district shot his wife after an argument; the woman died on her way to hospital. In the Frontier, a foreign NGO worker who had accused a security guard of trying to rape her, and who had sustained injuries in the process, reportedly withdrew her complaint after a court issued an arrest warrant for her for failing to pursue the case properly. Not a day goes by without reports of violence perpetrated by men on their daughters, sisters, mothers and wives. If it is not a case of a malevolent man’s honour being sullied by a close relation, it is that of a rape in which the woman victim ultimately finds herself on the wrong side of the law. Evil tribal customs that force minor girls into marriages to settle disputes also continue to plague society. If this is what Pakistan is in the 21st century, only heaven can help keep the country’s image unsullied.

Over the decades, the only difference made in matters concerning women is that now violence against them is being reported more openly. But this can be of little consolation to the wronged women; mere reporting of crime has not been a deterring factor for perpetrators of heinous acts of violence against women. The near absence of social responsibility among opinion leaders, the urban middle class, the political parties and the NGOs claiming to work at the grassroots level, and the existing set of anti-women laws are to blame for this sordid state of affairs.

The Pakistani papers are unique in giving interesting perspectives from a Muslim country in English (which they acquired from their British colonial heritage).

Apparently, violence against women is something of a problem in Pakistan, what with hands being chopped off and everything.

Why America continues to trade and all with ROP countries really confuses me. And we wall off cuba for far less reason.

These people are true monsters. The more I learn about Muslim, Islam the more I hate it. Well now two husbands have two wives without hands because they dared to visit their parents. Makes no sense, how are these poor women to feed and slave for these two morons? Next we will hear they burned them alive or something equally heinous because the couldn't do their wifely duties. Religion of peace ....more like religion of morons.

Kinda tough to fix dinner with no hands, but I bet they dont go visit their parents without permission any more.

Looks like a smart man would have only had one hand cut off or maybe a hand and a couple of toes.Well no one accused a Muslim of being smart.

I'm telling you , that will be the excuse for finally killing their wives. These monsters are dangerous. If I was a women living in one of those countries I would have to escape or die trying.

The answer, of course, is OIL. They have it and we need it. The answer is cheap and readily available alternate sources of energy. The best thing the world could do is finance a group of scientists and engineers to work full time on developing alternative fuels. It is not enough that the United States become energy independent. The rest of the world must as well so that money is not flowing into the Middle East cesspool.

They are now free to divorce them because they have a physical defect and are damaged goods.

Well I would hope they do so but....how do these poor women support themselves now? And the Paki men seem to like killing or setting women on fire. The whole thing disgusts me. I truly don't understand this culture and I don't want too. I hate going to the gas stations where these turban wearing creeps are thats how much I dislike them. They look at me and my daughter like we are evil.

Here is a good chance to apply our cultural standards to the issue.

In this country Mohammad would be jailed for pedophilia (sex with a 9 year old girl that he married when she was 6 Aisha,) theft (raiding caravans, plundering defeated enemies,) murder (assasinating his enemies openly and by subtrifuge) and rape (the rape of the jewess--he killed her father and raped her.)

We need to remind any Islamic person of this any time they criticize our culture. If its ok for them to criticize, so can we.
