Cholecalciferol IS viatmin D. The nomenclature is confusing, so you're not alone. Cholecalciferol is a D3 type (the D3 and D2 designations relate to chemical structures) and comes from animal sources; ergocalciferol comes from plant sources and is a D2 type. Ergo is OK, but why not go with the one that is made by your body from cholesterol and sunlight?
Both ergo and chole are INACTIVE forms of the active "vitamin" (really a hormone, and the inactive forms are pro-hormones). It takes two steps of chemical activation by the body (in the liver and then the kidney) to produce the active form.

Is it more beneficial to taking it in gel capsule form versus liquid form?

When I went back on cod liver oil (which I remember taking as a boy) I tried it straight, but found I couldn't stand the taste. So then I tried orange flavored, which is better, but I still couldn't stand the aftertaste. So I got the gel caps, which eliminate that problem for me.
As far as I know, liquid or gel caps work just the same. The gel caps cost more, but they're a lot pleasanter for me to take.

Nordic Naturals makes one that is orange flavored, so I just add it to my orange juice.

I take 4,000 IU per day and, based on blood tests, my doctor told me to keep doing what I’m doing. I take a 2,000 IU capsule twice a day.

"I take a 2,000 IU capsule twice a day." I just took two 5,000 IU capsules with dinner.

Same here. I take 3 calcium tablets daily, each with 700 IU of Vitamin D, plus 1 capsule of vitamin D, 2000 IU. That makes 4,100 IU per day.
My doctor approves.
