No Joke: NJ Mom Collects 'Silly String' for Iraq Troops

by KYW's David Madden

A Camden County, NJ woman is working on a plan to send cans of the children's aerosol toy "Silly String" to troops in Iraq.

Stress relief? Hardly.

Marcelle Shriver’s son has been in Iraq for a month now. She says Army and Marine units spray the string through the doorways of buildings before entering them -- to make sure there are no bombs inside:

"If the string falls to the ground, there are no trip wires. If the string hangs in mid-air, then they can see that there’s a wire and they do not go in until they can dismantle it."

And he wants more. She’s gathered two cases of the string so far, and $140 to help in shipping. She needs more of both.

Donations are being taken at St. Luke’s Church in Stratford, NJ, and at Our Lady of Grace in Somerdale.

Didn't get the impression that the mom thought of it, she's just trying to send some to her son who requested it because trrops are already using it.

Tech Sgt welds steel onto the front of a Sherman, bam instant bulldozer for hedgerows. WWII

Our troops have the brains unless they listen to John Kerry which I guess they didn't.

That would be SGT. Cullen I believe, for whom the Cullen Hedgerow Cutter was named. They were made from old German beach obstacles on the Normandy beaches.

That's what Rumsfeld ment by “you go to war with the army you have” --and let me add: you fight the war with what you have.

Anything to create some fun and enjoyment for our troops. I think it's a great idea, as are bubbles.

They listened to Jon Carry.

Better yet, they'll vote in 2008, and some of them are from Massachusetts.

Hey, since you brought it up - what is a good organization to go through for getting packages to the troops? I'll send them myself, if necessary, but I'll need some APO's.

Great story -- OK -- has anyone checked to see if the stuff can be shipped air? It is flamable, right? The stuff could prove deadly to an aircrew if it leaked and ignited. It would be much better to negotiate for the company to ship the stuff over or it will probably need to go hazmat shipping of some kind.

This is not a BS concern; Fed-Ex (for example) has only ever lost one aircraft---because someone hid a can of spraypaint in a non-hazardous shippment and it leaked and ignited in the cargo hold.

I hope the story is true. It's an awesome one.

Don't get the government involved. It will start going for $500 a can.

I'll be back with more info.

I was sick the past few weeks and missed the first deadline, Nov. 1, for Operation Christmas Stocking, which was the one I wanted to go through. FedEx was shipping stuff free to the Salt Lake City warehouse for that one.

Now I have to look for another one, since I have my stuff almost all ready (have to get some Silly String). I'll come back and post it here.
