'Israel Must Prepare For Full-Scale War'

By JPOST.COM STAFF

Israel has to prepare for a full-scale war, in which Syria will be an important player, an Israeli military official told the British Sunday Times. "The challenge from Iran and Syria is now top of the Israeli defense agenda, higher than the Palestinian one," another official said.

The recent war with Hizbullah and the threat that Iran could achieve nuclear weapons capability have led Israel to reexamine its defense strategies, and focus on the region's two major supporters of terrorism, IDF sources have said recently. One conclusion is that Israel has allocated too much time and energy to addressing the terror threat posed by Palestinian groups in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

According to London's International Institute for Strategic Studies, both Iran and Syria have ballistic missiles whose range extends over most of Israel, including Tel Aviv. Funds have reportedly been approved for the construction of appropriately equipped shelters.

Eyeing Syria, the IDF has formed a new infantry brigade, known as Kfir (young lion), as a countermeasure against Syria's commando forces, which are considered "better" than Hizbullah guerrillas, a military source informed the Times. The IDF is also reportedly integrating three elite brigades in preparation for them cooperating on deep cross-border operations into Syria and Iran.

Also, shortly before the Lebanon war, Maj.-Gen. Eliezer Shkedy was appointed head of the IDF's Iranian Front - and as such will command any future strikes against Syria or Iran.

Some analysts say that it would have been better for Israel to attack Syria during the recent war with Hizbullah. Syria has consistently supplied Hizbullah with weapons, and according to recent UN reports, has continued to smuggle arms to the organization despite an international embargo. "If they had acted against Syria during this last kerfuffle, the war might have ended more quickly and better," American analyst Richard Perle said.

"Syrian military installations are sitting ducks and the Syrian air force could have been destroyed on the ground in a couple of days," Perle continued.

Found a very interesting article.

Olmert: Ahmadinejad must be stopped

Here are the money quotes from Olmert.

”Iran must understand that if it spurns international demands, it will end up “paying dearly.”

"When questioned on plans to opt for a military solution, Olmert said: “think my words were clear enough. It is absolutely intolerable for Israel to accept the threat of a nuclear Iran. I prefer not to discuss the Israeli options. Israel has many options.”

Maybe it is just me, but it seems that Olmert is being very coherent here. Looks like 'cut and run' combined with 'sacrificing the neocon strategists' may end up killing millions. But hey, I am sure the old gang that brought us no fly zones and who asked the Kurds to revolt and take down Saddam all by themselves, will come up with a much better plan. Olmert seems to have a few doubts.

Nice imagery. To be perfectly frank with you I am not a schooled religious person. But I have to admit, this Armageddon stuff has some striking similarities to the present day world. From my perspective however, I have always wondered what would happen if Israel took their nuclear genie out of the bottle. Why would they stop with Iran ? They are literally surrounded by nations that are sworn to destroy them in present day terms. When searching around the blogosphere with Clusty, I did see some blog articles listed where the leftist blogosphere was responding to this all by trying to claim that the President of Iran did not really say he wanted Israel destroyed. I did not even bother to click on the link and read their articles.

The problem is the Israeli government lacks the will to win. Israelis do not trust Olmert and Peretz with the lives of their sons.

would happen if Israel took their nuclear genie out of the bottle.

You should learn more. When the king of the north attacks they will be driven back with pillars of fire.

The Russians are rebuilding their forces and China is modernizing. They will try to appease the Islams by attacking. This will happen.

Good points, but when I read those quotes from Olmert, I was quite literally floored. He is a leftist and has been realtively weak. He is clearly drawing a line in the sand and basically saying they will launch a first strike. You dont hear first strike talk from leftist.

Apparently the French peacekeepers were busy showing their own missiles to 'dancing girls' and they let 10,000 to 20,000 thousand terrorist missiles pass through. Gee. Who did not see that coming ?

The UN is a mess. Too bad the American voters just turned us back over to it. Maybe Bill Clinton can worm himself in the top slot in the UN. Then these jerks can have their bubba back.

An image that is truly amazing is the prophecy that one day all the nations of the world will converge on Israel, and that God will step in and save them.

If were are alive for that moment, think what it would be like to witness that on television.

We are going to reach a critical point fairly soon in this Iran and Israel confrontation. Most of the world knows that Iran will attack Israel. Irans leader has made that abundantly clear on numerous occasions. Dear lefties, it is not just a sematics error or a translation problem. The US did its best to try to alleviate the problem and we were in a logistical position to do just that. Iran more or less prevented this by conducting a guerrilla war within Iraq. It got us tied up and bogged down. Now only Israel can save itself, unless of course you are one of the spiritually inclined. The only logical explanation that I can see for canning Rumsfeld in the manner (not the fact) that he was canned, would be that we are letting Israel take control of its own destiny and time is of an essence. Dear we should have never gone in crowd, ever since Saddam was toppled Iraq has primarily been about Iran. Mainly due to their guerrilla war. Thus, Olmert is on a mission right now to explain to the world the 'situation' that Israel happens to be in (Newsweek interview). Deep down Olmert may think that there is still a chance that the UN can alleviate the situation, but he only has to look to Lebanon for proof that it will not.

Yes of course...Isn't the concept of Prophesy and destiny somewhat at odds with free will and for that matter the concept of good and evil?

Why bother or even care at at the fate of Israel if the outcome is pre-ordained anyway?

I am not religious schooled (except 1 year in a catholic school) and I do not read the Armageddon stuff, but from what I have learned over the years. Human action can be highly predictable. There appears to be no alternative now to a total war between Israel and Iran. Whether that fits with anyones scripture plans, is unknown to me.
