I don't see much difference in public displays of religion.

Aren't all people familiar with the Civil Rights' chant, "We shall overcome?" Obviously that phrase is being directed toward the lives and values of the African American community.

I refuse to be frightened by the use of words.

I'm afraid you missed the point. It's not the display, it's the very different reactions thereto. Displays of Christian belief in the political arena are and would be condemned (perhaps rightfully so) by many of the very same people who have no problem with this sort of thing. They have no problem with mixing religion and politics as long as the politicians aren't Christian. There is no consistency.
