TOPICS: Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: 2006; election; results
Here is a list of all the house races, for those interested. You can highlight the table and paste into Excel, sorting by various items.

UNOPP means unopposed. Some races didn't have a major party opponent, but did have a third party opponent. However, I did not include third parties in the above table. Too difficult, and I think a lot of people that vote for third parties won't ever vote for the R or D candidate.

Louisiana District 2 has a runoff between 2 dems. So I listed it as the D being unopposed.

I had a difficult time digging up Bush 2004 percentages, which I thought would be a decent complement piece of data.

I prepared this list by downloading data from various sites and aggegating it in Excel. I am sorry that the districts are sorted alphabetically...

Enjoy!

Thanks. What's the total aggregate R and D vote from the competative districts?

Don't you find it a bit suspicious that the was not ONE R pickup? I would love to know how they engineered this complete Dem victory.

Have you forgotten? Puto Chavez owns the company that sells and maintains the electronic voting machines.

Maybe Ted "I Drowned Her" Kennedy made a secret deal with Chavez just like he did with the Soviets in 1984.

Thanks! I've been hoping to find this data.

In summary, in contested races:

* 67.7 million votes were cast in total.

* The rat's margin in those races was 2.4 million votes.

* Total margin of victory, 3.5%.

A couple of conclusions may be drawn:

1. This was not a blowout. It was similar to the 2004 presidential election with the parties reversed. In effect, fewer than 4% of the voters switched parties (this ignores turnout effects, which, I suspect, account for a hefty portion of the 4%).

2. Once again, the generic polls overstated the rat's margin of victory in congress--the generic polls showed a 7-11% preference for dems just before election day.

3. The Republican GOTV effort probably saved us a huge defeat. Of the Republican seats that we held on to, 15 were decided by 3% or less and 21 were decided by 5% or less. Generally, our GOTV is worth between 3% and 5%. So if anyone is thinking their efforts on GOTV were in vain, remember this year and think how much worse it would be if the rats had taken 21 more seats than they did.

The good news is that it looks like with some competent candidates, and someone who isn't a drag on the top of the ticket in '08, the R's look like they have a decent shot of reducing the D's majority.
