Giuliani Will Make Decision On Presidential Candidacy In 2007
Standard Speaker ^ | 11/13/06

Posted on 11/13/2006 7:15:38 AM PST by areafiftyone

WILKES-BARRE - “Secure the borders,” said Rudy Giuliani when asked about the nation’s illegal immigration problems in Wilkes-Barre Sunday night.

While calling for strong measures to secure the borders, the highly acclaimed former mayor of New York City said it is also important that a solution be reached that would prevent illegals presently in the country from going underground and becoming a serious threat to the welfare of the United States. He does not oppose people entering the county legally.

When asked if and when he will make an announcement about being a candidate for the Republican nomination for president, Giuliani said, “I’m giving it a lot of thought. It will be sometime next year.”

He said the recent election centered on three main issues: the Iraq war, corruption and the failure of the government (the administration and Congress) to get much accomplished.

“You won’t know what the (Nov. 7) election was about for three or four months,” he said.

Giuliani made his remarks at a press conference at the Westmoreland Club in Wilkes-Barre prior to appearing as lecturer at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in the Wilkes University Outranking Leaders Forum.

Vitally important, Giuliani said, is “responsible government that will address the threat of terrorism.”

He said the goal in Iraq is to achieve an accountable, responsible government there. He is, with great interest, awaiting the report from the commission headed by James Baker on what steps should be taken to reach the goal.

“A good accountable responsible government (in Iraq) will reduce the threat of terrorism,” he said.

“We have to remain steadfast in Iraq.”

One plus, he said, is that there are governments in the Middle East that are interested in democracy.

Turning to the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea, Giuliani said the problem is that those countries would be able to develop very dangerous nuclear, biological and chemical weapons that could get into the hands of terrorists with dire consequences.

“We have to stop nuclear proliferation,” the former mayor said.
Giuliani said candidates for office should reach out to young people.

“College,” he said, “is an opportunity to develop what you believe in.”

This writer prefaced one of his questions with, “Greetings from Hazleton.”

“My wife’s from Hazleton,” Giuliani said, adding that she didn’t make the trip with him and was at their home in New York City.
Giuliani is arried to the former Judith Stish of Hazleton.

Giuliani was introduced by Dr. Tim Gilmour, president of Wilkes University, at the press conference, which was preceded by a sponsor’s reception at the Westmoreland Club.

Following the press conference, a New York City-themed buffet was held at the nearby Armaud C. Marts Center. Following the buffet, Giuliani’s topic at the Kirby Center was “Leadership in Difficult Times.”

Attendees at the well-planned and well-carried out event were transported from the Westmoreland Club, the Marts Center and the Kirby Center by shuttle buses provided by Wilkes.

I heard a Rudy speech on CSpan recorded a couple of days before the mid-term. I was very impressed - I think he may take front runner status once everyone notices that John McCain does not look healthy.

Rudy has been speaking to sold out crowds! It's amazing - even after the 2006 elections it's still sold out audiences for him. He's a winner!

Guliani and McCain anointed front runners, and a host of unknown conservatives drawing single digit % support.

This is starting to feel like '96 with moderate Bob Dole as the GOP's choice because it was his "turn."

McCain may be anointed by the MSM but Not Rudy. Rudy is #1 in the polls with the American people and if he is voted in it will be because the American people want him there not because of the MSM.

I watched the same speech. He was in New Hampshire. I was very impressed with the whole speech. He sounded like a Reagan Republican and was unashamed of it. This guy could be the one for 2008.

Former Democrat, New York Lawyer, pro-abort, anti-gun, trying to change up his opinions enough to draw in the votes?

No thanks. We don't need another RINO.

I like him. I disagree with him on a lot of things, but I think he'd be a law & order guy, which we need, and which Bush is not. Not my top choice but I'd vote for him before a lot of others, especially the diabolical McPain. I'd probably vote for the rat before I voted for McCain.

I saw Rudy yesterday at 6:30 pm on C-Span. He was phenomenal!!!

BTW, I recently downloaded Google Earth (the free program) and was surprised to be able to zoom in close on Groom Lake and Area 51. Didn't see any alien crafts, however...much to my disappointment.
