Is FBI Sugarcoating Threat?
IBD ^ | Nov. 13, 2006 | IBD

Homeland Security: The FBI continues to claim America is free and clear of terrorist sleeper cells. But last week's startling announcement by Britain that it's tracking 200 cells casts doubt on that claim.

Is America really less radicalized, or is the MI5 simply looking harder than the FBI? One thing is for sure: British authorities appear more candid about the threat from Islamic radicals.

In a speech released Friday, the head of the MI5 said her agency had foiled five major plots since the 7/7 bombings in London — including last summer's al-Qaida plot to blow up 10 airliners over U.S. cities — and is tracking almost 30 terrorist plots involving a whopping 1,600 suspects.

I wonder how big the threat is here in the states? Thanksgiving and Christmas are such big travel times. I am glad I will not be going anywhere this year.

And now that the supporters are in charge of congress there will be NO more terrorist attacks. It will all be hate crimes or a crime of passion or just a regular killing. The threat of terrorist will go away and the supporters will declare that there was never a terrorist threat. And it should have all been handled by the police.

Has the FBI really said there are no sleeper cells? I generally trust IBD but that opening sentence isn't very plausible.

So long as they speak a little Spanish, terrorists are welcomed here by the Country Club Republicans hooked on campaign cash from the cheap slave labor agri-business employers.

is the MI5 simply looking harder than the FBI?

...FBI is doing their job too but if we try to compare both agencies, i think FBI is facing more difficulties with gathering infos because of ACLU, CAIR or other stupid Liberals who thinks they are right with "terrorist tolerance". The Brits however are far less concerned about it or perhaps less hindered to do indept intelligence gathering.

IBD is rarely wrong -- I have actually never known them to be wrong and they are right this time too.

See this:

Secret FBI Report Questions Al Qaeda Capabilities

And for all the worry about Osama bin Laden's sleeper cells or agents in the United States, a secret FBI assessment concludes it knows of none.

Doesn't give you a warm feeling about the FBI's competence, does it?

Ok, I read the rest of the article. Basically IBD twists what Mueller says and then claims his statement is wrong. This is why I've lost interest in politics lately - it's like trying to settle an argument between people whose only interest is to fight. Why bother? Let them destroy each other. They don't want my help - they only want me to believe their slanted version.

How stupid. Fanatical Muslims give not a swinging damn about American politics. They care only about the encroachment of the ideas of Western Culture that give freedom of thought to those who might question their corrupted view of the Koran.

Wait. The bombs will here come -- and the Democrats will rationalize the intent of the bombing murderers.

Meanwhile you guys and I just sit and wait.

If we were threatened by terrorists I'm sure the White House would close down the Mexican border.

CNN ran that piece today.
Is the terrorist threat real or is the government just trying to scare us?

Our "Director of National Intelligence", Negroponte, is a diplomat, a negotiator, a compromiser.....by art and trade! This article, IMO, reflects a word-game.....by one who has his OWN inclinations, those of the Bush Administration, and is somewhat and somehow subordinate to the smoke-and mirrors Negroponte.

a few more snips from the article:

if you believe the head of the FBI, who insists his agency has found no evidence of additional al-Qaida terrorists in America since 9/11.

"I don't think al-Qaida is largely represented in the United States, or people that espouse violent extremism," FBI Director Robert Mueller recently told CNN.

Mueller, known by his agents for his political correctness, may not want to call attention to the Islamic threat. It also is possible the FBI is downplaying the domestic threat so as not to panic the public or incite vigilantism.

Good point! We know it ain't so, there's too much co-related social behaviour patterns here for those patterns not to include the terrorist cells and rat lines themselves.

No, they're just ignorant of the threat.

But don't let that worry you.

Now that the terrorists have beat us at the ballot box how long do you think it will be, before they attack again?

Somebody opined that they're too clever for that.
I think he's wrong!

What good does it do to tell us there are hundreds of cells? I don't think anyone believes there are NO cells in the U.S. when ones have been found in Buffalo, Oregon and elsewhere.

But it does no good either to create a panic. We can't just start beating on everyone with a turban. Many of them are here because they don't want to live like the jihadists.

As long as the FBI and law enforcement know where the cells are, the public doesn't need to know. It's better if the terrorists think they are invisible because then they will get careless and reveal themselves.

OK, no panic. how about some realism, some truth, so that when the average american sheeple walks into a voting booth, they have some connection to this issue.

has the FBI even gotten email to work at the agency yet? that was one of their big post 9-11 "reforms".

Mueller should have been replaced long ago.

Asked whether there were Al Qaeda cells in the United States, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff pointed to groups in Portland, Ore., northern Virginia and elsewhere convicted on terrorism-related charges.

"We've seen these cells," he said in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation." "And we're continuing to conduct active investigations of other cells."

Read the article I linked in my post 9, from ABC News in 2005:

"And for all the worry about Osama bin Laden's sleeper cells or agents in the United States, a secret FBI assessment concludes it knows of none.

The 32-page assessment says flatly, "To date, we have not identified any true 'sleeper' agents in the US," seemingly contradicting the "sleeper cell" description prosecutors assigned to seven men in Lackawanna, N.Y., in 2002."
