science ping. And last night I watched a show about "monster volcanoes" that go off every several hundred thousand years with enough force to cause massive plant and animal killing ice ages. And Yellowstone national park is one of them and the most active.

Slight correction and addition. The small one in CT points in a different direction than the one in LI, and that one is in Hither Hills State Park near Montauk. The Times spelled the name of the park incorrectly in the article.
