It's annoying to see "swift boating" and "McCarthyism" accepted as pejoratives.

The latter was an invention of CP/USA, I believe, and the former the invention of the leftists pukes who are heroes to the North Vietnamese Communists.

McCarthy lacked charisma, was definitely not telegenic, and he was a heavy drinker -- but he was consistently accurate, history has proved. Ditto the Vietnam war veteran critics of Kerry (the consistently accurate part).

Not to disparage Kerry's service(s); but after all though Benedic Arnold proved that you could be a hero to both sides in the same war it's not generally an honor.
