I teach ESL in a middle school in Los Angeles, just east of Hollywood. I'm lucky: my students are mostly Hispanic. They're wild, they're undisciplined, they're unmotivated, some of them are in gangs... but for the most part, they aren't hostile to me because I'm white. And my principal, while softer on crime than I would be, is very supportive. When she retires next year, I'm going to be very uneasy waiting to see what her replacement is going to be like.
How much learning gets done since they are not focused on getting an education?
