Would it charge from a couple of meters away, though? I haven't heard of any everyday household devices that are able do this, although perhaps I've just missed the boat :)

Certainly not meters. But the same principle could be used, say, for instance you had a low voltage ac current running through a coil build into your desk.

Set your laptop on there (or leave it overnight) and Voila!
