That's an excellent idea. Remember that conservatives actually got rid of the aging liberal Jake Javits in New York in 1980 by running Al D'Amato against him in a primary.
The Pubbies need some young blood here in NM, especially one with an Hispanic surname. Unfortunately, unless you are like Richardson and tout your half-Mexican heritage every chance you get, a lot of Hispanic voters pull the lever for a candidate with a surname like theirs. That's just the way it is here, especially now as the Hispanic population is growing. As an example, the Republicans had Manual Lujan as the US representative for NM-1 for many years. Since then, it has been a struggle each election to retain that seat with the Democrats running a Hispanic candidate each time.
Good news for the GOP. 2008 is already going to be a very tough year for us in the Senate, with the GOP having to defend 21 of the 33 seats in play, a number of which are in states where the GOP is very vulnerable (NH, OR, MN, VA, CO). The Dims, OTOH, only have one, maybe two, of their 12 seats that could be called vulnerable (SD, LA) - the rest should be stone cold locks for them. The Republicans will need all the help they can get to avoid losing even more seats in '08 - Domenici's decision to stay will give them some of that help.
I'm hoping that he'll decide to call it quits once the gravy train that provides bridges to nowhere dries up under the Dim leadership - at least some good could come out of the November elections, anyway.
This is a funny story.
Both will be gone in ‘08.
