Lecturers will be asked to report on Muslim students suspected of involvement in extremism under Government guidance expected today. The document, drawn up by the Department for Education and Skills, comes amid continuing concerns that universities are a breeding ground for Islamic terrorists.
Sheikh Musa Admani, the Muslim chaplain at London Metropolitan University and an adviser to Bill Rammell, the higher education minister, said this week that he was aware of at least four universities in which students claim to have been "groomed" by extremists. Some students had been so deeply indoctrinated that they had gone to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight.
Today, the DfES is expected to release the guidance which, according to an earlier draft, urges all university staff with concerns about "Asian-looking" or Muslim students to report them to the Special Branch.
The move has been condemned by Islamic groups and the National Union of Students (NUS), who said it amounted to "McCarthyism".
Gemma Tumelty, the NUS president, said: "All students have an interest in defeating terrorism, however, we are concerned that the steps that have been suggested may end up vilifying whole groups and communities."
Last night a spokesman for the DfES said: "This is not about spying on Muslims or targeting Muslim students. It is about improving community cohesion and responding to a small but real threat."
Universities have expressed concerns about the guidance, saying there were "dangers" in targeting particular groups. Prof Drummond Bone, the president of Universities UK, said: "Not only is this unreasonable but it could be counterproductive."

Ping!
They coulda gone with a more general description, which could include things like we had with the Weather Underground when they were active.
Read #5 including the links. Now the future potential terrorists are being readied right before our eyes.
"In WWII the US "interned" jap Americans.. we had NOT ONE incident of homeland terror...."
And to date, the USSC has NEVER ruled against the internments.
In fact we interned Japanese, German and Italian origin residents; not just Japanese.
thats my point.
None that were reported. But back then the press were patriots.
