Shelley Sekula-Gibbs talks about rough first week in Washington

(11/17/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - She's already served one-seventh of her congressional term. Now, Shelley Sekula-Gibbs is touting what she's accomplished on Capitol Hill. And she tells us why most of her staff walked out on her.

Gibbs won an election ten days ago to serve the rest of Tom DeLay's term. But earlier this week, most of her staff quit, saying she was a mean boss. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs has had quite a week.

"I knew I would have to get to work and work fast," she said.

And she did, already voting on the floor and pushing for money for Ellington Field and NASA. She also called for a congressional investigation into eight staff members who quit abruptly on Tuesday.

"There are a lot of reasons that employees from an old administration may have disgruntled feelings going forward," she said.

She said that staff, who previously worked for Tom DeLay, illegally erased important files after they left. They deny it and the former chief of staff emailed us a response, reading in part, "Never has any Member of Congress treated us with as much disrespect and unprofessionalism as we witnessed during those five days."

It goes on to say, "The congresswoman is exactly right when she says, 'The voters of the 22nd Congressional District have a right to expect the employees of this office to serve their needs in a professional manner,' and that includes herself."

"I think it creates a great deal of noise in the system," said Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace.

Mayor Wallace is a possible primary opponent of Sekula-Gibbs two years from now. He's a fellow Republican who's surprised at the events of this past week.

"I think when you have something like this, it's a great deal of distraction and what we're seeing is a lot of interviews on TV and things of that nature, which is taking away from the process of governing," said Wallace.

And for Sekula-Gibbs, it's just one week down, seven to go.

"I'm a very small part of a very big team," she said. "I don't want to overstate that."

Sekula-Gibbs has until the end of the year as the representative of the 22nd district, then Nick Lampson takes over for two years.

Lampson's term will start after the term vacated by tom DeLay, who served in the 22nd district since the mid-80s. He left Congress earlier this year and is still under a conspiracy indictment, accused of funneling illegal corporate funds to Texas candidates in 2002. That's back when DeLay was majority leader of the House of Representatives.

Ignorant Dem plant broad that Houston was happy to get off of the city council. She deserves everything she gets. And then some.

I think she's not ready for primetime. If she's having a hard time, she made it that way.

Ms Hyphen probably came in talking trash about DeLay. If so, she definitely got what she deserved.

She also called for a congressional investigation into eight staff members who quit abruptly on Tuesday.

People quit their jobs? That sounds serious. No one has ever done that before.

Why did the local Texas GOP establishment rally around her and freeze out David Wallace who, with his simpler name, would have had a much better shot at a write-in win?

David Wallace is rumored to have tainted business dealings. As for Ms. Sekula-Gibbs, a pro-life woman doctor makes for great publicity.

You keep pushing Wallace, we'll keep telling all. Interesting he's the one who just had to say something about this when keeping out of it would be far better.

Add to that a woman MD with a rating of "A" from the National Rifle Association.

I don't live in TX or really know anything about Wallace except that he has a much better name for a write-in candidate.

Yes, people are stupid and need an easy to remember/spell name if a write-in bid is to succeed. That's my criticism of the Shelley-Sekula Gibbs, M.D., nomination.

Ain't that the truth.

Spelling is not the problem, some people just will not take the time. Her name was posted inside every voting booth. IF spelling is a problem go with Charlie Howard or Robert Talton, either is far better than Davy W.

Frankly, I don't think the Republican write-in candidate's name or credentials would have changed the outcome of the race in TX CD-22.

It's my understanding, from research I've done and the reports of others, that a write-in candidate has never been successful in winning an election in the state of Texas. It's nearly impossible to get the required number of write-in voters to register their votes correctly and overcome the huge advantage of the straight-party ticket vote that goes to the opponent.

An investigation? Does she think those people are slaves or indentured servants?

Maybe they quit because they got tired of having to pronounce her long, silly name every time they answered the phone.

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collecter Paul Bettencourt has announced that he will likely seek this seat in 08'. He's popular with the Conservative base in the Houston area and would likely get the nomination.

Sekula-Gibbs got 61949 votes as a write in candidate and lost
Sekula-Gibbs got 76940 votes as a candidate for the special election and won

There were 148,259 cast in the full term election
There were 123,928 votes cast in the special election ..

I don't think spelling/writing the name in was the issue as much as maybe many voters didn't know to do so, lazy, didn't care or want her for the full term, or who knows what other reasons. They voted for her once with her name on the ballot but failed to vote for her when they had to write the name in. It shouldn't have been a problem for those desiring to write the name in.

Lampson did not run in the Special Election. In fact, there is some thought that many people voted for her in the Special, and then skipped the General, believing they had already done their duty.
