I agree that the funds should go to the families that entered the agreement and not the politicians. The families are the only victims. However, this is an Agreement, a contract. If there is a breach of a contract, they should only be entitled to monetary damages and not the building of the road.

And, no I don't expect the Feds to keep their word on Social Security.

I swear. I don't think I've ever met two people that want to spend the taxpayer's money so badly. All for a 'promise' by a dead Democrat that ruined this nation with all of his policies. Planned economies, ramped up government employment, monetary disbursements for the elderly, and expansion of internal improvements on the government's dime. And yet you call yourselves conservatives (well Dane does, NCmtnGirl just signed up yesterday so hell that could be Dane too for all I know as no other conservative would be in agreement for his wasteful spending)

If we're to go back and 'fix' every broken 'promise' by the national government to every group, what's left of the Republic would be broke by Christmas.

Whew boy, you want to keep that govt. paid for road all to yourself, while denying the people of Swain County a similar road.

Good try but no. The road's already there. My solution on roads (if they are not post roads as outlined in Article I Sec. 8) is to do what was intended. Turn them over to private industry. Let the companies that need them build the roads as necessary, purchase the right of ways from the landowners as necessary, and maintain the roads. Contrary to 'conservative' belief there would not be a toll at every street corner, but hey that lie's worked so far so keep it up eh?

Please bill, do not patronize.

Face it you are basically an AlGore elitist.

NCMtnGirl, actually lives in Swain Couynty, and would like to see a promise kept(i.e the road), while you, billbears don't live there, and wish to see that promise not kept, for your own personal selfish reasons.

But I have to. I can't take anything seriously you say. I didn't think I'd live to see the day again that Republicans had a hole burning in their pockets to spend taxpayer dollars.

Face it you are basically an AlGore elitist.

I see, I see. Now why am I an AlGore elitist? Hmmmmm, I don't want to waste taxpayer dollars for a road that

A)you know nothing about and really can't offer an informed opinion about and
B) would not add any major benefit (except perhaps government jobs. And Lord knows you Republicans are all for government jobs these days.)

A side effect is yes preservation of land, but that doesn't make me an AlGore elitist. Come on, Dane. You've got to up the name calling!! You've already gone for the Nazi 'end justifies the means', can I get a Marxist moniker at least?!?

Again as has been pointed out, I still have kin up there that would be affected by this road. Some in the outer edges of Swain, some in Macon. Being as 'informed' about the situation as you are I shouldn't have to tell you where those counties lie in relation to Fontana Lake, Bryson City, Cowee, and the like. And because you have one poster that signed up yesterday to support your cause to waste money, you think that all of Swain County by default must support it. I can find quite a few people in that area that are as against the road as those for it. For numerous causes. And they're not 'AlGore elitists'. They're good mountain folk that don't want to be bothered about it anymore

In reference to "one" being Indian, you should be ashamed of that racist statement!.

American Indians are a lot more scarce than they once were. How is observing that fact "racist?" I thought knee-jerk cries of "racist!" were a tactic of the left.

Hiked through that stand about twenty or twenty-five years ago.

Amazing.

Hardwood trees that have blown down across the trail, the rangers come in with big saws and cut out a V shaped piece-

The "V" is about a foot wide at the ground and then it tapers up so it's wide enough for your pack frame to clear when you walk through. And I'm less than 6 feet tall, and these trees were bigger in diameter than I am tall.
