"Smallpox threat prompts isolation of airline passengers"
By Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

McClatchy Newspapers

(MCT)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "CHARLOTTE, N.C. - More than 100 US Airways passengers were stuck on a plane at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport on Friday for about three hours after a man on a flight from New Orleans announced that he'd been exposed to smallpox.

"He basically said, `I've been exposed, you've all been exposed,'" as the plane taxied to Gate C10, US Airways spokeswoman Michelle Mohr said.

After landing at 3:30 p.m., the plane stayed at the gate, surrounded by fire trucks and ambulances, while the man was evaluated by doctors at Carolinas Medical Center. Doctors said he showed no signs of the disease.

Authorities took contact information for passengers and crewmembers in case there are medical issues."

"Hill bill protects flying public"
By Audrey Hudson
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
March 24, 2007

House Republicans are pushing legislation to protect airline passengers from lawsuits for reporting suspicious behavior that might be linked to a terrorist attack.

Rep. Steve Pearce, New Mexico Republican, introduced the Protecting Americans Fighting Terrorism Act of 2007 on Thursday, a week after a lawsuit was filed by a group of Muslim imams who were taken off a US Airways flight in November.

It is "unconscionable" that those who report suspicious activity could be "terrorized in our own court system in our own country," Mr. Pearce said on the House floor yesterday afternoon."
