The Prime Minister, John Howard, says he still supports Australia's controversial involvement in the Vietnam War.
Mr Howard made the comment as he was leaving Ho Chi Minh City at the end of his first official visit to Vietnam.
He told reporters he will not recant his support for Australia's military role in Vietnam in the 1960s and '70s.
"I supported our involvement at the time and I don't intend to recant that," Mr Howard said.
"I believe that in public life you are accountable for the decisions that you take.
"I didn't hold any position of authority then, but I supported the reasons for Australia's involvement.
"Nothing has altered my view that at the time, on the assessments that were made then, I took that view and I took that view properly."
No "mush mouthing" from this guy.
It's quite refreshing.

It makes me so proud that for more than a hundred years the Australian Nation -- and not just, from time to self-serving time, a few of its politicians -- has been America's First and Best Ally.
As is exemplified by men like John Howard and, on the other side of politics, has been epitomized by the likes of John Curtin, of whom his political foe, Paul Hasluk, wrote: "John Curtin did not fight hard to become prime minister and showed some reticence about assuming office. Having come to the heavy responsibilities and finding them greatly increased by a new turn in the war that was already being waged, he grew in wisdom, character and strength with the added burdens that were laid on him. His own dedication was complete. He held back nothing from his service to the nation [and]...he lived out his own text: 'I ask every Australian to go about his allotted task with full vigour and courage ... We shall hold this country and keep it as a citadel for the (English Speaking Race) and as a place where Civilization will persist."

If I ever saw a clearer and/or more in-your-faces example of political cynicism, even among the self-anointed, self-appointed and self-perpetuating manifestations of abject evil that "govern" Ms Clark's most-favored former soviet union and "china," it has, thank God, escaped my memory.
