Pelosi Announces Opening Session of 110th Congress

Washington, D.C. – Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi announced today that the House of Representatives will open the first session of the 110th Congress on January 4, 2007 and will remain in session for several weeks in January to take up crucial legislation that will address the urgent priorities of the American people.

“From economic security to national security, the American people have resoundingly called for a New Direction. It is imperative that we waste no time in addressing the pressing needs facing our nation,” Pelosi said. “In the first 100 legislative hours, Democrats will get to work immediately to restore civility, integrity, and fiscal responsibility to the House, while increasing prosperity, opportunity, and security for all Americans.”

Included in House Democrats’ first 100 legislative hours are:

* Draining the swamp – break the link between lobbyists and legislation and commit to pay-as-you-go budgeting, no new deficit spending * Making America more secure – implement the independent 9/11 Commission recommendations * Giving Americans a raise – increase the minimum wage * Making college more affordable – cut the interest rate in half on federally subsidized student loans * Making health care more affordable – negotiate for lower prescription drug prices * Ending subsidies for Big Oil * Giving hope to families with devastating diseases – allow stem cell research

A feel good agenda. Nothing of which addresses our real problems.

“From economic security to national security, the American people have resoundingly called for a New Direction.

Yes, we're tired of low unemployment, low interest rates, low inflation, a growing economy, a record stock market that is actually based on value and not on a dotcom bubble, an active homeland security department that keeps track of terrorists, listens to their plans and goes after their finances, takes the fight to them, and prevents further attacks on our soil. We need a new direction, Nancy.

"crucial legislation" is an oxymoron.

commit to pay-as-you-go budgeting, no new deficit spending * .... * Giving Americans a raise – increase the minimum wage

So, does that mean that when you factor in the decrease in government revenues from the economic decline due to the minimum wage increase, coupled with the increase in government expenses in the form of higher unemployment payments, the democrats will cut spending elsewhere?

Are they going to cut off in-state tuition for illegals and foreigners? How about no low interest rate loans to non-american students? No low interest house loans to the above mentioned groups as well? No Medical Care and Education for illegals, huh Nancy? This would really help American economy and the wallets of hard working AMERICANS!

Does this mean that the rats will stop oil shale research and stop other sources of oil?

"Give Americans a raise"

This only proves once again how utterly clueless they are about how the economy works. I'm not gonna get a raise in income from this at all, and I'm just gonna wind up paying more for a lot of things. Of course, the blame for that will be laid on greedy businessmen.

economic security to national security

read between the lines.
All 'national security' employees will now have 'economic security' through the unions.
The government will further its control on means of production.

In the first 100 legislative hours, Democrats will get to work immediately to restore...

debate everything...keep tacking on amendments, let the clock run out. then hammer time on nothing done in the 100 hours.

The 9/11 recommendations are going to cost untold billions. Pay as you go? Here come the tax hikes, will Bush veto?

.....Nothing of which addresses our real problems. .....

The loss of revenue by big oil can be easily solved by raising prices in the Blue Zone.
