Nobody saw a missile. Some people may have seen a streak of light, but at night, nobody would have seen the missile. The airplane was about two miles up in the air, and eight miles off the coast. Assuming the missile's rocket motor was burning, a fast moving dot of light is what a missile looks like. If the sustainer motor had burned out, and the missile was in its coast phase, nothing would be seen.
