The purpose of a campaign is to put in the place the team that will govern. At this point, Mclame and Rudy are the closest to having committees in each state which will promote the candidate. I personally prefer Newt for the strategic thinking he offers, his media appearances, and his foundation are at least a starting point for a National Campaign. What evidence do you see that Duncan Hunter has anything like a National footprint or is willing to do what it takes to assemble one?

Where is the requirement we get only a Governor? And what's this about the Senators? The House was sticking up for conservatism while the RINO Senate was caving in. You have to look at quality and stop the bias just because he's a Rep. Hunter is someone you can picture as a strong President and he only needs to nomination because he would more than prove himself.

Fine, Show me how a Duncan Hunter nomination can generate the necessary electoral votes and I'll buy it.

Yes, I agree. We'll suffer for not having a strong field of known conservatives. We're just going to have to endure another "occupation" and fight to keep up state's rights, as well endure a third hit.

Rep Hunter has nothing to lose - he can be the "John the Baptist" in the campaign stays around long enough to deliver a strong defense message and cut through the bs and just speak the plain truth.

But he'll have to endure the early east coast polling, and no one will know him. And independants/swing voters will see too close a resemblance to Bush in his message - they've turned off the truth last few years.

A great man, who's son IS fighting in the military! --can't get him involved in that discussion

His ONLY less than positive point is that he looks like he's mad all the time. He needs more smiling pictures. You know how much America is a visual society...these stupid things matter. Part of W's charm was that we felt like he was a guy down the street--one of us.

Other than that, Duncan has all the credentials, and can debate Hitlery with skills far superior.

Show me how I'm wrong. Is there another way of looking at it? The media candidate is McCain; Romney can't win: he's a Mormon; that leaves Rudy.

I don't like it either, but who else is there? Barbour is too chubby to do well on tv. Hunter hasn't the base to spring him.

The Barbour comment, I know, sounds insipid. But look around, it's an insipid world out there.

And you are only going by name power! What happens when '08 rolls around and Rudy or McCain came out as our nominee and lose? What good is name power then? How about principles and how about someone who WILL be a great candidate?

Hate to say it, but if the goal is purely to defeat Hillary, it's going to boil down to Giuliani or McCain.

I think that is a sure-fire way to assure we have a President Shrillery. The MSM is pushing them down our throats for a reason - and it isn't to help the GOP win!

That ain't a requirement. But that is the history. Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Bush the Second were all governors (Bush the Elder was not, but he won on Reagan's coattails). Governors have executive experience.

I'm still hoping we can have a "Newt" for president

I believe there are a lot who think the way you do.

I'm a Duncan Hunter fan. I sat next to him on a plane from Corpus Christi to Houston a few years ago. He's without a doubt one of the nicest men I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

We chit-chatted about where we had been and where we were going. Mr. Hunter had been hunting in South Texas with friends. I told him he looked familiar to me and asked if he was a major league umpire, LOL! He was wearing a ball cap and that thought just blurted out of my mouth! It wasn't until I kept mentioning that he looked familiar that he finally told me that he was a U.S. Congressman from California.

Mr. Hunter changed the subject and wanted to hear about my story. My mother had just had quadruple bypass surgery in Corpus and my step-father was partially paralyzed from a serious stroke. The two of them were really in a bad way. He was so interested in their plight and kept asking questions. Before landing in Houston, he said that he would like to say a prayer for them. He grasped my hand and prayed aloud for the two of them. I was very touched and will always remember his kind and genuine nature. Duncan Hunter is a very good man and our country would be blessed to have him as our President.

Sure. Just make sure to watch him during the GOP nomination process. If we'd only pay attention and stop the bias and 'name recognition' process we are involved in now, we'd be able to see a quality candidate. Name recognition is not going to win this thing. You have to be able to know what you stand for and stand firm. Duncan Hunter has everything but the high-profile name, sadly.

James Webb seemed to use his son. Hunter would kick his arse. Hunter is no Benedict Arnold.

So I guess Duncan Hunter beats her?...

I just read something about him the other day. It was about the first time I guess I remember seeing the name. It may have been at TownHall.com or it may have been here at Free Republic. It sounds like his sentiments are in the right place. Naturally, he has obstacles to overcome that may be insurmountable.

When was the last time a candidate jumped from the House to the White House? I would guess it to be more than a century.

I have never heard him talk. How does he sound? I have had about enough after 6 years listening to a guy I think I supported more than not who speaks with such a lack of precision that it's torture listening to him give an explanation of anything. Can Duncan Hunter rally the rank and file?

I don't think the Republicans simply lost the last election. I think they forfeited it through attrocious leadership and representatives at all levels that simply lost their way and morphed into Democrats.

The Republicans can win again when a candidate takes the reins who understands that the foundation of the party was turned off by bad representation, who has the credentials to say he isn't part of that cadre and who can make his case in an exciting articulate way.

Is Duncan Hunter such a candidate?

I do like what I hear from Hunter, but I doubt 1% of the population outside of California knows who he is.

Is he thinking of throwing his hat in the ring?

I don't know how to convince people on here that think you have to follow the media and the 'names' because the media is going to turn on any GOP candidate and name recognition is going to mean NOTHING by then. Duncan Hunter is strong in response and firm in his beliefs and very Reaganesque. I think the nomination would take care of anything because he would then have the national stage to campaign straight to the people.

Hunter has no chance against Hillary. 08 is shaping up as the ultimate celebrity election. I doubt he could even win CA, where he is from. Also, we need to look deeply into his dealings with lobbyists as Chair of Armed Svcs. So far I see Rudy, McCain as the only two viable and a real chance of Prez HELLary
