I just want to have a thread to discuss House Rep. Duncan Hunter who is going to be one of our GOP nominees. Seems as if a lot of people on FR are complaining about our choices for 2008 when this great man is going to be in the race as well. I just think he needs to get some coverage and wanted to start this thread.

He is the man conservatives should get behind and I think he deserves his own thread to remind us that we do have a great candidate this time if we'd only realize it.

Before he said he was running for president, I'd never heard of Duncan Hunter. Everything I've heard from/about him since has been great. While it's true that he has little to no "name recognition" at this point, I think that if conservatives can come together on him or any other real conservative canidate, then we can get them recognition. Free Republic is mentioned often on talk radio and even on Fox sometimes. We have more power than we think (even the Ditzy Chits fear us :))

Yeah right.

He wouldn't carry California. The three choices as of now are: McCain, Rudy or Romney.

Sanford, Barbour, and Sonny Perdue are not running.

I would vote for Newt in a heart beat if I thought he was electable - he has to know he's not. Now a cabinet position - ok.

I agree with the consensus here a Representative from the House doesn't have the name recognition, etc. for president.

I'm kinda glad Allen faded early although I'm not happy he lost his Senate seat. He doesn't even have half the substance of his Dad - who was a great man (IMhO).

Of the kinda announced candidates Romney is my guy.

Haley Barbor is someone I would like to see run - JC Watts, I really like, especially for VP, but when you consider the alternatives - I really have to say, honestly, I will hold my nose and vote for any (R) for President right now.

Pride, opinions and preferences aside - this is a battle we must win - and third party candidates or the Vast Right Wing sitting on their votes - will not bode well for the USA - too much can go wrong too fast to give the RATs another chance leading this country from the White House.

now I'll go back to getting ready to watch the Friday afternoon football games and stop thinking about this mess we're in.

I like what Hunter has said about immigration and I like that he's from California and that he's a conservative.

The major obstacle is going to be the MSM picking winners and losers and raising money. By the time my state has its primary the field has already been narrowed, so you might get lucky and actually feel like you have a choice when you go to vote.

An idea that I have is having a national "primary" day (like election day, but for the primary), so those of us who usually have later primaries can have a say in who actually gets nominated.

If someone wants to be president of the country, then they shouldn't be picked by only a handful of states and the MSM.

I think that would go a long way to getting a candidate we like, not a candidate who happened to win the earlier primaries.

Yeah, the up-front costs would be huge and some states would lose their "special status", but we'd see who gets the money and organization that they need to compete in all 50 states.

And with all the state primaries being on the same day, there isn't the long drawn out media parade and "X won these two states, so he's still competitive whereas Y isn't." If we know that X won in only 2 states, but Y won in 15, and the results were given on the same day, then I think we'd have a better chance of getting a candidate who represents us better. Because if you can win in different areas of the country, then there must be a message or idea that is resonating with people.

I don't think the system is going to change anytime soon. But I think the primary system that we have now needs to be significantly reformed if we want to elect people who are conservative, not RINO. JMHO

Hunter is currently at the top of my list.

Is it possible that he could carry his home state?

He's my first choice, then Rice or Gingrich.

Most of the others can go pound salt, including the leftist media's "front-runners" RUDEY, McPain and Romney II.

There are 200 House Republicans, no doubt there are attractive, capable conservatives among them. The fact is, however, that it hasn't been since 1880 that a House Member was elected President, James Garfield.

At the time of his nomination, Garfield was Republican floor leader in the House, and was Senate-Elect. Garfield was also a Civil War General. He had been nationally known for nearly 20 years.

I don't think (maybe someone can look it up) that any House Member has been nominated (and lost) for President since Garfield.

Duncan Hunter is a fine House Member, but he does not have the qualifications needed to gain the Republican nomination, and if nominated to win.

Representatives don't get elected president, so don't hold your breath!

Lazio is also a Conservative and Hillary had him for a side dish; not even lunch; when she ran against him, originally, for a Senate seat.

Hunter picked up an early endorsement from U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., a bit of a surprise because of the expected candidacy of that state's GOP Sen. John McCain.

"I have had the privilege of serving ... with Duncan Hunter and know him to be the John Wayne of Congress," Franks said in explaining the endorsement. "He is a man of genuine compassion for humanity and a formidable soldier of freedom."

Franks added that his decision to back Hunter rather than McCain was made because of his "belief that during a time of war political calculations should not decide who someone endorses."

"Duncan Hunter's leadership is right for America," Franks said.

Interesting.

I'm open to him, but I don't know that much about him and I've never heard him speak. Do you have any links to audio or video?

We could use another credible candidate. Right now we got the guy who's a bit too off his rocker, the guy who's a bit too liberal, and the guy who's a bit too Mormon.

I want to encourage as many conservative Republicans as possible to enter the race. We need lots of solid candidates, and I intend to keep my eye on Duncan Hunter. Thanks for bringing him to my attention.

However, the first thing I thought when I saw his picture was, "untelegenic". I'm sorry, but the reality today is that a person needs to really shine on the TV in order to have a chance. Next to Hillary, Hunter will look like lint unless he gets an image consultant. He's got boring white male written all over him, and no amount of earth tones will be able to change that. He makes Al Gore look like Prince Charming.

Not that it's right, mind you. What a sorry state when image outranks substance. But it's the world we live in, and we need to face this.

What is his stance on my tagline and the proper role of government in our lives??? I'll seriously consider him if someone knowledgeable about his stances will answer that for me... I don't know the man at all, really!!!

I do believe in "guilt by association" and I'd also like to know who he likes and dislikes in order to size him up for support, or non-support. Someone please help out here with true observations if you will. Sincerly!!!
