I just want to have a thread to discuss House Rep. Duncan Hunter who is going to be one of our GOP nominees. Seems as if a lot of people on FR are complaining about our choices for 2008 when this great man is going to be in the race as well. I just think he needs to get some coverage and wanted to start this thread.

He is the man conservatives should get behind and I think he deserves his own thread to remind us that we do have a great candidate this time if we'd only realize it.

I think that the last man to go from the House to the Presidency was James Garfield.

In this media driven presidency there's no way he can be nominated.

I'm afraid the choice is: Rudy, McLame, and Romney. And Romeny's not a real choice. The media will NEVER allow a Mormon to be elected.

So, it's Rudy/McLame.

I can tell you right now, given this choice to face Hillary, I'm gonna take Rudy every time.

IF..you want a man who will make decisions in favor of the whole USA--Vote Duncan Hunter.

If you buy the Bulls**T put out by the machine of McCain, Juliani, Romney, or someone else who is tied to "Large Corporate Interests", vote for them.

A great man, who's son IS fighting in the military! --can't get him involved in that discussion

His ONLY less than positive point is that he looks like he's mad all the time. He needs more smiling pictures. You know how much America is a visual society...these stupid things matter. Part of W's charm was that we felt like he was a guy down the street--one of us.

Other than that, Duncan has all the credentials, and can debate Hitlery with skills far superior.

I'm a Duncan Hunter fan. I sat next to him on a plane from Corpus Christi to Houston a few years ago. He's without a doubt one of the nicest men I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

We chit-chatted about where we had been and where we were going. Mr. Hunter had been hunting in South Texas with friends. I told him he looked familiar to me and asked if he was a major league umpire, LOL! He was wearing a ball cap and that thought just blurted out of my mouth! It wasn't until I kept mentioning that he looked familiar that he finally told me that he was a U.S. Congressman from California.

Mr. Hunter changed the subject and wanted to hear about my story. My mother had just had quadruple bypass surgery in Corpus and my step-father was partially paralyzed from a serious stroke. The two of them were really in a bad way. He was so interested in their plight and kept asking questions. Before landing in Houston, he said that he would like to say a prayer for them. He grasped my hand and prayed aloud for the two of them. I was very touched and will always remember his kind and genuine nature. Duncan Hunter is a very good man and our country would be blessed to have him as our President.

I just read something about him the other day. It was about the first time I guess I remember seeing the name. It may have been at TownHall.com or it may have been here at Free Republic. It sounds like his sentiments are in the right place. Naturally, he has obstacles to overcome that may be insurmountable.

When was the last time a candidate jumped from the House to the White House? I would guess it to be more than a century.

I have never heard him talk. How does he sound? I have had about enough after 6 years listening to a guy I think I supported more than not who speaks with such a lack of precision that it's torture listening to him give an explanation of anything. Can Duncan Hunter rally the rank and file?

I don't think the Republicans simply lost the last election. I think they forfeited it through attrocious leadership and representatives at all levels that simply lost their way and morphed into Democrats.

The Republicans can win again when a candidate takes the reins who understands that the foundation of the party was turned off by bad representation, who has the credentials to say he isn't part of that cadre and who can make his case in an exciting articulate way.

Is Duncan Hunter such a candidate?

I do like what I hear from Hunter, but I doubt 1% of the population outside of California knows who he is.

Is he thinking of throwing his hat in the ring?

Independents are a large voting block. Hunter should learn from the RINOs failure of appealing to independents if he is going to have any chance of becoming President.

Look.
Duncan Hunter is a great guy.

He is an excellent legislator, with a clear and no nonsense manner, whom I greatly admire.
He is NOT my representative (I reside across the country)but I believe he is a decent and honest man with the nation's interest at the forefront of his agenda.

He has a particular leadership, interest and skill within his committee and has provided well for the military.
He, Rep Hunter, in his area of expertise is a huge asset.
He similarly has an proud, excellent and laudable military history for his service in Viet Nam.

Mr.Hunter however, does not have the executive background that would provide the **electable** factor for a Duncan Hunter candidacy.
Command of a military small unit does not provide it.
A CEO/COO of a major corporation could do it. A General Officer could do it(if you could fine one willing to run without the "slimeball" factor attached to his persona, a la Wesley Clark)
A Governor could meet the criteria.
Legislators (Senators & Representatives)who have not governed cannot be elected; lacking that experience he has less electability than Baraak Hussein Obama, I am sad to say.

If he is the nominee of the Republican effort, I will vote for him against any leftist candidate, but Duncan Hunter is not on 2008's menu.
Sorry.

Who knows how much further into the hole of oblivion Bush will dig the GOP into with his milquetoast "new tone in Washington" and the DNC in charge of Congress.
