Vanity: THE GOP nominee for '08; His name is Duncan Hunter
bushfamfan | 11/24/06 | bushfamfan

I just want to have a thread to discuss House Rep. Duncan Hunter who is going to be one of our GOP nominees. Seems as if a lot of people on FR are complaining about our choices for 2008 when this great man is going to be in the race as well. I just think he needs to get some coverage and wanted to start this thread.

He is the man conservatives should get behind and I think he deserves his own thread to remind us that we do have a great candidate this time if we'd only realize it.

The media will turn on McCain or Rudy if or, as you seem to think should be the case, WHEN they get the candidacy. So much for name recognition!!

No mere congressman will be elected President.

Duncan Hunter has endangered our national defense because of his protectionist actions for the specialty metals industry. There are three specialty metals factories in the US. They smelt titianium and other metals. They cannot produce enough for the contractors building weapons systems for the US military. Yet Hunter has led the charge to require the military to only buy systems that contain American smelted specialty metals. The result? There isn't enough. There were some loopholes but they were closed this Congress, by an amendment sponsored by Duncan Hunter. He had wanted to tighten up the law even more but President Bush threatened a veto. You know it had to be bad if the President threatened a veto.

So, I oppose a man who would endanger the United States just for campaign contributions.

Exactly! That's what I'm saying. The skids are being greased for Hillary. The best hope we have is that she makes a big mistake. But as someone said above, she's already been vetted. The MSM/liberal combine wants her. They know her, they don't like her, but they think she can be more or less controlled.

I'd love to see a conservative get the nomination; but then, I though George W. Bush WAS a conservative. Something happens to these people when they get to Washington.

Where is the requirement we get only a Governor? And what's this about the Senators?

1960 Senator John Kennedy won. Before that it was 1920. You do not make it to President from the congress. You just don't. You are either a VP, former VP, Former Senator, or a sitting congressman. Clinton, W, Carter, Reagan were all Presidents. Bush 41 was the sitting VP, Ford got in on a technicality. Nixon was the ex VP, Ike was a general. LBJ was the VP, Truman was the VP, Roosevelt was Governor. Just Kennedy came from the Senate. That is it.

Newt has great ideas. However, because of his serial adultery he is out of the picture.

This thread is depressing. You can honestly say conservative principles are dead. McCain, Rudy seem to be ok'd because of 'name recognition' and people want to write Hunter off with no chance. Guess it's a sign of the times. Too bad Republicans are a lost bunch that don't even offer up quality candidates any more. You're NEVER going to get the media behind you or keep a party intact that is throwing away quality like this.

SAD. Hunter is from California and has no chance as Senator or Governor. But I guess we should just throw this great man away who SHOULD BE PRESIDENT because he's only been a Rep. and chairman of the armed services committee. He has more than enough experience but I'm discouraged by the responses on here. Bad situation with the GOP. Welcome President Hillary. No good Vietnam vet will ever be President either.

Who knows how much further into the hole of oblivion Bush will dig the GOP into with his milquetoast "new tone in Washington" and the DNC in charge of Congress.

Sad thing is it will NEVER get better. It's like the illegals we are allowing into our country now. Look at the countries they come from for an example of what the Demonrats look to as voters to bring them to power. They continually put into office scoundrels that keep their countries in third world status and now they are coming here to bring and keep the Demonrats in power. This is the death of the American republic. The sun is now setting.

You are exactly right. We did survive Carter, and if it comes to it, we'll survive Hillary. The best thing we have going for us is the Roberts' Court. Thank God for the Bush appointments.

As for this thread being depressing; yes it is. Wars are never fun, and we have two of them going on right now: Iraq, and the culture war.

The single biggest thing we need to do in this war is to find some way to dethrone the MSM. For forty years they have pimped the whore called the Democrat party. People need to find out there ARE ways to get the truth.

FR is a start.

The dems have already begun to attack and define him. Do you have faith that the republicans will attack back?

I second the nomination for Gingrich, he's the only person capable of presenting a real agenda for America and make Hillary look like the vapid phoney she is. Go, Newt, go!

Hunter does fight back. That's one of my fave things about him. I seriously think he is the one who would be the most challenging and feared by Hillary, etc. And how about a GENUINE war hero who has had his son serve in Iraq when they like to throw those attacks about 'chicken hawks' about. Hunter would destroy Hillary on defense.

Welcome President Hillary

No, she is out of it too as a sitting Senator. It's not going to be Hillary either, or McCain, or Kerry. Newt, Romney, Guiliani have better shots as Republicans, Edwards, Richardson, Vilisick have better shots as Dems.

Romney is the best of the names who have a shot that you named. Forget Newt. What are his approval ratings?? Are you seriously going to say Newt, who went out so badly as Speaker, is going to have any shot with the public?? Yet you won't give a good man like Hunter, who is just as conservative as Newt and actually LIVES up to those standards, a shot at the nomination. Giulianni will have trouble getting a lot of pro-lifers to vote for him when we will need every vote and to keep the 'red' states. I see it as a disaster.
