Well actually Music is forbidden only among the hardcore Wahhabist-Salafist Muslims (Taliban etc.), but even Al-Qaeda have their pseudo-dramatic religious "battle" songs.
The Middle Eastern cultures (Turkish, Kurdish, Persian, Arabic etc.) have respective music cultures (separate from religious "culture"), but the religious nutjobs object it.
Khomeini, as a Shia, for example hated music (but allowed classical music to be played later) although Shia Islam in general has less problems with music than Sunni Islam.
To make all this long nonsense short: Islam has music; some sects like it, some allow it, some object it, some kill the listeners. But you have again to differentiate between traditional music, religious music (shia), classical music (all three i.e. allowed in Iran), and Western entertainment music, which of course is opposed strictly.
I know it's a mess. ;)

Western entertainment music, which of course is opposed strictly. Given the 'qualities' of the tripe coming out of our music industry is it any wonder? I look at the dregs who produce our music these days and find myself appreciating the muslim intolerance for the social influences of Bono, Madonna, Elton John, any number of rappers, & etc. Perhaps not all of their (muslim) opinions are necessarily flawed.
