There's an interesting sidebar to this article you ought to read. It turns out that polonium is primarily an alpha particle emitter and those rays can be stopped by almost any hard object, even a paper bag. Thus, a vial of it in solution could easily get by ordinary radiation detectors that detect the highly penetrating gamma rays. The nasty thing about alpha particles, again according to this article and the sidebar, is that, once an alpha emitter gets into the body, there are no hard surfaces to stop the alpha particles and they are utterly devastating in that environment.

Po-210 is an alpha-emitter. Alpha particles can be stopped by a sheet of paper and don't travel in the air more than a few inches. They are only dangerous if inhaled or ingested where they irradiate the tissue from the inside.
